The assassination attempt on Yunus-Bek Yevkurov, seen as a moderating influence in the most unstable of the Russian Caucasian republics, left him fighting for his life.

He was admitted to hospital in critical condition, while at least four of his bodyguards were killed.

Although reports from Ingushetia were contradictory, the president's prognosis seemed grim. Doctors at the hospital where Mr Yevkurov was being treated said he was on life-support in intensive care. But a presidential spokesman said that Mr Yevkurov's life was "not yet" in danger.

Observers said that the assassination attempt was likely to trigger a swift and possibly brutal Kremlin ...

Five Years Later, Repercussions Of Nazran Attack Still Reverberate

by Liz Fuller

Five years ago, on the night of June 21-22, 2004, militants under the command of veteran Chechen field commander Shamil Basayev attacked the Interior Ministry headquarters and other police buildings in Nazran, the capital of Ingushetia, killing some 80 people, including acting Interior Minister Colonel Abubakar Kostoyev, his deputy Zaudin Kotiyev, and two local prosecutors.

That multipronged attack focused attention on three hitherto obscure trends that have since taken shape and accelerated the evolution of the Chechen resistance into a pan-Caucasian radical Islamist movement.

The first of those trends is the extent to which arbitrary police reprisals against young practicing Muslims across the North Caucasus have impelled increasing numbers of them to take up arms against a corrupt and ineffective leadership and, specifically, against the police and other security agencies.

The second is the emergence of semi-autonomous resistance groups in North Caucasus ...

Five Years After Nazran, Ingushetia Still Plagued By Militant Violence

by Claire Bigg

On the night of June 21, 2004, in one of the best-planned attacks by Chechen separatist rebels, hundreds of armed men stormed the southern Russian city of Nazran, leaving a trail of destruction and death in their wake.

The raid alarmed the Kremlin, which had boasted of bringing stability to the North Caucasus after a decade of war with Chechen separatists.

Led by Chechen warlord Shamil Basayev, the heavily armed assailants targeted 15 official buildings in Ingushetia's main city as well as several towns and villages in the republic, which borders war-battered Chechnya.

They caught Nazran off-guard, wreaking destruction for one night before withdrawing with two truckloads of seized weapons and only minimal losses on their side.

"It was already dark when the shooting suddenly started. I went to the center of Nazran and heard that shots were being fired throughout the ...

A Russian special forces soldier stands guard outside the Presidential building of Russia's Republic of Ingushetia in Magas.

A well-known religious figure and former republican deputy prime minister have been killed in the latest wave of violence in Ingushetia, in which several soldiers and policemen have also been killed and wounded.

On June 16, Kavkazsky Uzel quoted sources in Ingushetia's Interior Ministry as saying that a serviceman was wounded in an attack in Ingushetia's Sunzha district on a column of vehicles from the 22nd brigade of the Interior Ministry's Internal Troops. The sources said the incident took place on a road between the villages of Chemulga and Chemulga-1 and that three to five gunmen attacked a convoy consisting of an armored personnel carrier, a Ural truck and an armored UAZ jeep. Ingush President Yunus-Bek Yevkurov with Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov.

The high-profile assassination of Dagestan's Interior Minister, police Lieutenant-General Adilgerei Magomedtagirov, on June 5 - responsibility for which was claimed personally by the commander of the Gimry Jamaat, Ibragim Gadzhidadaev (EDM, June 12) - has been followed by similarly gripping events in the North Caucasian enclave of Ingushetia.

On June 10, unidentified gunmen in Ingushetia's capital Magas opened fire on the Gazel vehicle carrying deputy chairwoman of Ingushetia's Supreme Court Aza Gazgireyeva, who was killed in the attack. Six other people, including passersby and a child were also wounded in the shootout (www.svobodanews.ru, June 10). This murder of a republican Supreme Court justice may have been an attempt to put pressure on the court in light of the tentative start of the proceedings in the ...
