NAZRAN, Russia — Something is changing in Ingushetia, the tiny tinderbox of a republic that neighbors Chechnya.
The new president, Yunus-Bek Yevkurov, has ordered security barriers removed from most government offices, reasoning that authorities should not need protection from their own people. He rents a modest house from a retired state prosecutor, expressing some discomfort with the gold-domed presidential palace.

Ingush Mujahideen kill three local residents found guilty of spying and witchcraft

Ingush Mujahideen have claimed responsibility for killing three local residents, two of whom were found guilty of spying and passing sensitive information to Russian authorities, and the third was found guilty of witchcraft.
All three killings were reported by Russian media at the time. The statement is translated in full.

Mujahideen of the Ingush Sector have issued a statement regarding firefight and explosion in Nazran on 12 February. According to official Russian sources, three Mujahideen were martyred and four Russian OMON police were killed. Unofficial Russian reports put police death toll at 15.
Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds, Who sent down Koran as the guidance, exhortation and reminder to believers, and created us Muslims and did is a great favor with Jihad on His straight path.

The last day of January 2009, after a nearly eight-year hiatus, a national convention took place in Ingushetia. The common practice of bringing together the republican government and representatives of the people was discontinued during the presidency of Murat Ziazikov (2002-2008). Yunus-bek Yevkurov marked his first 100 days as president of the Republic of Ingushetia in a somber atmosphere. During the past week, the authorities in Ingushetia, including the president, searched for three possible suicide bombers who allegedly arrived in Ingushetia from outside the republic to carry out a terrorist act and shared the extraordinary news with the population through mass media (Lenta.ru, February 6).
In recent years Ingushetia has grown accustomed to two types of daily events: 1) operations carried out by the armed opposition against the authorities and 2) military operations conducted by the law enforcement authorities against members of the armed resistance.
