One dead in shooting in Russia's Ingushetia

24/11/2009

One person was killed in Russia's North Caucasus republic of Ingushetia on Monday when unknown assailants opened fire on a car driven by a police officer, Ingush police said.

The attack took place in the republic's largest city of Nazran at "around 8.50 a.m. [5.50 GMT], when unknown assailants armed with automatic weapons attacked a VAZ-2115 car," the spokesman said.

The police officer behind the wheel was severely wounded in the attack and a woman identified only as "his relative" was killed.

An investigation is ongoing.

Attacks on troops, police and other officials have been reported almost daily in Ingushetia and Russia's other North Caucasus republics in recent months.

On August 17, Ingushetia was rocked by a suicide bombing which killed at least 20 people and injured 260 people. In June, Ingush President Yunus-Bek Yevkurov survived a car bomb attack on his motorcade.

Police kill militant in Russia's Ingushetia

26/11/2009

Police have shot dead a militant during a special operation in the south Russian republic of Ingushetia, a police spokesman said on Thursday.

According to police, the militant was killed in a shootout in a forest in the republic's Sunzhensky District at around 3:00 p.m. (noon GMT).

"No police officers were injured," the spokesman said.

Militant attacks and clashes remain common in Russia's North Caucasus, even though the Kremlin campaign to fight separatists and terrorists in neighboring Chechnya has officially ended.

Ingushetia Boss Admits Corruption Fuels Rebellion

MOSCOW (Reuters) -- The leader of Russia's Muslim republic of Ingushetia, who narrowly survived an assassination attempt in June, conceded on November 22 that widespread state corruption was helping an Islamist insurgency in the region.

He declined to say what proportion of officials were corrupt, but acknowledged the problem was bad enough to fuel a cycle of violence and crime that has put his impoverished region at the heart of mounting violence across the North Caucasus.

"Bandits give money to officials, knowing they can be easily paid off," Yunus-Bek Yevkurov told Reuters in an interview during a trip to the Russian capital. "This in turn means officials are [aiding] the terrorists and militants."

He added that law-enforcement agencies were also behind eight kidnappings this year.

The tall, moustachioed leader, who spent two months in hospital including a fortnight in a coma after a suicide bomber blew up ...

Native of Ingushetia kidnapped in Egypt

Nov 14 2009, 20:00

Mussa Mankiev has reported that his brother Ibragim Mankiev, born in 1977, was kidnapped in Egypt.

According to Mussa, his brother together with their mother, his wife and two children have been living in the city of Alexandria, Egypt, for more than three years.

"On November 10, 2009, Ibragim went with the wife to the embassy of Russia with the aim to change their passports," said the brother of the kidnapped person. "Having filled in a repeated application about issuance of a new passport, he left the embassy and went towards the embankment. Some 200-300 meters away from the embassy of Russia, he and his wife were attacked by unknown persons, dressed in civil clothes, who used brutal force, beat them with truncheons, pushed then into a car and left nobody knows where."

According to Mussa Mankiev, on that very day his brother's wife was released, but she ...

Ingushetia’s President Loses his Luster in his First Year in Office

Publication: Eurasia Daily Monitor
November 13, 2009

President of Ingushetia, Yunus-bek Yevkurov

October 31 marked exactly a year since Yunus-bek Yevkurov was appointed as President of Ingushetia. Yevkurov replaced Murat Zyazikov, who was removed by Moscow (www.ingushetia.kavkaz-uzel.ru, October 31, 2008). The change of leadership in this small North Caucasus republic took place after it became impossible to hide from the Russian public that Zyazikov, Moscow’s protégé, who happened to be a silovik –a regular FSB major general– could not make state institutions fight against armed opposition represented by the Ingush jamaat led by emir Magas (Akhmed Yevloev).

In an attempt to distance himself from his predecessor, President Yevkurov tried to establish direct contact with the public at large. He started going to mosques and listening to people’s complaints. He set up a special telephone line, so that people could call him directly and ...
