Eight Killed In Clashes Between Security Forces, Militants In Southern Russia
Monday October 12, 2009 20:28:00 EDT

(RTTNews) - At least eight people, including two security personnel and six militants, were killed in a military operation in Russia's volatile southern republic of Ingushetia on Monday, according to officials and Russia media reports.

Media reports indicated that the fighting between the security forces and rebels erupted in Ingushetia's Sunzhensky district, near the border with Chechnya. Police officials said that two other security officials were injured in the fighting, which is still continuing.

Russian authorities meanwhile said the militants are resisting fiercely despite being surrounded by security forces. Re-enforcements have been rushed to the scene of the fighting.

Ingushetian President Dissolves Cabinet, Fires Prime Minister

Yunus-Bek Yevkurov dismissed Prime Minister Rashid Gaysanov and the entire republican government on October 5, citing as the reason for doing so corruption and ministers' failures in resolving socioeconomic problems, including in agriculture.

He named Security Council Secretary Aleksei Vorobyov as acting prime minister; the remaining ministers will continue to discharge their duties pending the naming of a new cabinet.

It is not clear whether Yevkurov criticized Gaysanov by name, or whether the latter is personally implicated in corruption.

Yevkurov selected Gaysanov, an economist by training, to head the republican government in November 2008, shortly after Yevkurov was named president. The latest move by the insurgency in the North Caucasus was not entirely unexpected. It has finally dawned on the rebel leadership of the Caucasus Emirate that waging a war against everyone is a hopeless proposition. Their perpetual hostility toward Sufi Islam resulted in pushing away the majority of those unhappy with Russia's posture in the region, or at best, alienating them from the whole concept of a religiously inspired Emirate. The bitter strife between the Salafi and Sufi ideologies occasionally made it look like the militants spend more time and effort fighting Sufis than their real enemy -that is, Moscow.
