Military Base In Ingushetia Comes Under Attack

A man walks by the ruins of a shop destroyed by militants in Ingushetia. Russia is struggling to quell an Islamic insurgency in the region.

August 13, 2010
Unknown assailants today launched an attack on a military base in the Sunzhensk district of Ingushetia in southern Russia.

The attackers used grenade launchers and automatic weapons to fire on the base. No casualties were reported.

The Interior Ministry in Ingushetia reported the firing came from a nearby residential area and that troops on the base did not return fire because of worries about civilian casualties.

Russia is struggling to quash an Islamic insurgency in the North Caucasus, which also includes Chechnya and Ingushetia.
