Beslan anniversary marked by pipeline fire

Published: Sept. 1, 2009 at 11:16 AM

On the fifth anniversary of the Beslan school shootings, Russian police blame terrorism for an explosion at a gas pipeline in the republic of Ingushetia.

Local police tell RIA Novosti the cause of the explosion is not verified, though they believe terrorism played a role.

Officials said the fire is still going early Tuesday. The pipeline runs from the Russian republic of North Ossetia to Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia.

The explosion comes amid a flurry of terrorist activity in south Russia. Two car bombs rocked the southern republic of Dagestan early Tuesday, killing one and injuring at least 14 others.

The pipeline incident closely coincides with the anniversary of the August 2008 conflict between Georgia and Russia over the breakaway republics of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. That conflict played a role in the disruption of oil through the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline, the second longest in the world.

Apart from militant activity, the explosion comes on the heels of major industrial accidents in Russia.

Lightning in late August caused a fire at two oil reservoirs the Konda facility in the Khanty-Mansi autonomous area in Siberia.

Two water ducts collapsed Aug. 17 at the Sayano-Shushenskaya power station in Siberia, flooding a turbine hall. A fuel tank also ruptured, sending oil some 50 miles downstream in the Yenisei River.

A standoff between Chechen rebels and the Russia military resulted in the death of more than 300 hostages at a school in the town of Beslan, North Ossetia-Alania Sept. 1, 2004.
