Two Russian peacekeepers killed in ambush in Georgian breakaway
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2006-08-04 14:34

Two Russian peacekeepers were killed in a robbery attack late Wednesday in Georgia's breakaway region of Abkhazia, Russian news agencies reported on Thursday.
The two servicemen died of wounds sustained in the attack after they were rushed by helicopter to a hospital in Sochi, a resort town on the Black Sea coast of southern Russia, Defense Ministry spokesman Col. Vyacheslav Sedov told the Interfax news agency.
The attackers tried to grab the salaries of the peacekeepers, which were being shipped in a bus escorted by a car with security guards. The attackers, in a car without a license plate, overtook the convoy and fired at the escort car, seriously wounding the two servicemen.
The attackers fled without grabbing the money. "One of the servicemen in the bus fired back at the attackers and ...

PRAGUE, August 17, 2006 (RFE/RL) -- It was perhaps no coincidence that Ukrainian Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych's meeting in Sochi with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, coincided with an informal meeting of the Eurasian Economic Community (Eurasec) -- an organization Ukraine is not a member of.

It looks like Moscow is working hard once again, since the appointment of the pro-Moscow Yanukovych, to bring Ukraine back into its orbit.

Yanukovych was in Sochi for talks with Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Fradkov about the price Ukraine will pay for Russian gas. On August 16, Yanukovych announced that both sides agreed to keep the current gas ...

Russian Pipeline Monopoly Warns Lithuanian Refinery of Long Shutoff

17.08.2006

The president of Russian oil pipeline monopoly Transneft Simon Vainstock said on Thursday, Aug. 17, that the branch of its Druzhba oil link that supplies crude to Lithuania’s Mazeikiu Nafta oil refinery may be shut down for years in order to conduct much-needed repairs.

“This could happen,” Vainshtok said in an interview with The Moscow Times, an English-language Russian daily, speaking of a long-term shutdown. “You understand that the lifespan of a pipeline according to industry norms is 30 years. Druzhba-1 is 42... It is made out of metals that are now forbidden,” he said.

MosNews has reported that an oil leak was reported on Druzhba-1 on July 29. Transneft cut supplies to the Lithuanian refinery at the beginning of August, while it continued to supply ...

PRAGUE, August 19, 2006 (RFE/RL) -- On October 5, Chechen Prime Minister Ramzan Kadyrov will turn 30, the minimum age for candidates for the post of pro-Moscow republic head.

Many observers both in Russia and abroad have long considered it a given that Kadyrov will be named to succeed incumbent republic head Alu Alkhanov before the end of this year, even though Kadyrov has denied harboring any such ambitions.

A recent visit to Chechnya by a large Russian government delegation, whose members were cited in the Russian press as unanimously lauding Kadyrov's role in expediting reconstruction of the republic's war-shattered infrastructure, has also been widely interpreted as ...

RIGA, August 16, 2006 (RFE/RL) -- August 21 marks the 15th anniversary of Latvia declaring full independence from the Soviet Union, after the failed coup attempt in Moscow a few days earlier. Since then Latvia has gone from strength to strength, joining the European Union and NATO in 2004.

"June 17, 1940, the Soviets came in, and in 1941, the Germans came in and pushed back the Soviets," says Oskars Gruzins, a young guide at the Museum of Occupation in the heart of old Riga, as he shows tourists a large map of Latvia. "After the Germans were defeated, the Russians took the Baltic countries once again and we were occupied until 1991."

Running his fingers along the lines crisscrossing ...
