Window on Eurasia: Diomid Case Proves Chukchi Separatism is No Joke, Russian Nationalist Says
Paul Goble

Vienna, July 8 – Dissident Orthodox Bishop Diomid, whether intentionally or not, is helping to promote separatism in Chukotka, according to on Russian nationalist commentator. But another Moscow analyst suggests that the Kremlin’s own behavior in this case is doing far more than the embattled churchman to threaten the territorial integrity of the country.
In an article on the Pravaya.ru portal, Yury Bazhenov says that Russia risks losing Chukotka for reasons both domestic and foreign. Domestically, that Far Eastern region is so far from Moscow – more than 10,000 km and more than 10 time zones – and so cut off -- its towns are accessible only by irregular air routes that the center does not exercise effective control.

Window on Eurasia: Russian Afgantsy Want Moscow to Celebrate Their War Too
Paul Goble

Vienna, July 6 – Russian veterans of the Soviet war in Afghanistan have appealed to the Kremlin to quash the negative assessment of that conflict the USSR Congress of Peoples Deputies returned in December 1989 and to include February 15, when they commemorate Soviet action there, on the list of Russian Days of Military Glory.
On Friday, the Russian Union of Veterans of Afghanistan appealed to the country’s leadership to formally repeal the condemnation of that conflict, which many see as having led to the end of the Soviet Union, and to officially declare that the conflict in Afghanistan should be recalled alongside other Soviet and Russian victories (www.apn.ru/news/article20267.htm).
The Union, which claims to speak on behalf of the more than 650,000 surviving Russian veterans of that war, attracted the backing of Frants Klintsevich, a Union leader ...

Moscow not willing to settle conflicts in Georgia
Publication time: 12 July 2008, 11:41
Russia is not interested in settlement of conflicts in Georgia and this country's entrance to NATO, and therefore, provokes Georgian- Abkhazian and Georgian-Ossetia conflicts, experts consider. " Moscow appears to think that so long as Georgia is in conflict with its breakaway regions and Russia, Georgia will not be allowed into NATO.  So Moscow does not see itself as having an interest in resolving the Georgia crisis," American expert on Russia, Mark N. Katz, said.

The difference between the self-declared republics - South Ossetia and Abkhazia - and official Tbilisi over the last week acquired the character of the military confrontation. After tragic acts of terror in Galya and Tskhinvali, the unrecognized republics accused Tbilisi of the aggravating situation, and Tbilisi highlighted its non-participation and in its turn, accused Russia and self-declared regimes of the acts of terror.

The steps ...

Protest action against systematic violation of human rights in the North Caucasus
RUSSIA, Moscow. On July 10 in Moscow at Novopushkinsky Square, the Moscow department of the United Civil Front conducted a protest meeting against the systematic violation of human rights in the North Caucasus. Participants included representatives from the Committee on Anti-War actions, the human rights center “Memorial”, and the “Defense” movement - a total of about 30 people.

The organizers' statement said: “Do not believe deceitful propaganda!

Violence in the North Caucasus continues as before. Instead of proposing social projects to Russian citizens of this region, the Putin - Medvedev regime prefers to solve problems by shootings and by repression. Hostage-taking by intelligence agencies and unjustified aggression with respect to people who are only suspected of connections with fighters in the North Caucasus long ago became standard. In Moscow and throughout central Russia, people do not understand to what extent the ...
