Russia begins North Caucasus exercises Moscow July 05, 2008 Russian military officials said Saturday they've begun large-scale military exercises in the country's troubled North Caucasus region. The training is meant to improve cooperation between federal army troops, Interior Ministry soldiers, border guards and the Russian air force in a region that continues to experience frequent attacks from militant separatists, RIA Novosti reported. The exercises, called Caucasus Frontier 2008, will be played out mainly in Chechnya, North Ossetia, Ingushetia, Kabardino-Balkaria and Karachayevo-Circassia. The active phase of the multi-stage exercise will be held through the second week of July, Maj. Gen. Vladimir Maystrenko, deputy chief of staff of the North Caucasus Military District, told the Russian news agency. During the first five months of 2008, Ingushetia alone was the target of 53 attacks in which 12 police officers and four servicemen were killed and 57 others were injured. Military conflict looms between Georgia and South Ossetia Publication time: 8 July 2008, 18:37 Georgia and its breakaway region of South Ossetia are gearing for a military conflict, Russian media reports said Tuesday after both sides began evacuating children from the area. A spokesman for South Ossetia President Dmitry Medoyev accused Georgia of preparing to invade the territory, which declared its independence following the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, resulting in a bloody conflict that killed hundreds of people. The pro-Western Georgian leadership has said it is determined to bring the breakaway region, along with the rebel region of Abkhazia, back under Tbilisi's control. The South Ossetian spokesman said Georgia was strengthening military fortifications and surveillance operations, the Russian state-run news agency RIA Novosti said. Rice warns Russia over Georgia row Publication time: 10 July 2008, 19:05 Condoleezza Rice, the US secretary of state, has urged Russia to help resolve tension in Georgia's rebel regions rather than "contributing to it". Rice was in Tbilisi, the country's capital, on Thursday in a show of support for Georgia, an ex-Soviet state which wants to join Nato and is at the centre of a tussle for influence between the US and Russia in the strategic south Caucasus. Georgia's pro-Western government is locked in a confrontation with Russia over South Ossetia and Abkhazia, two breakaway regions backed by Moscow and where Russian troops are deployed.
