31.5.2008 00:58 MSK Lvov deputies ask President of Ukraine to abolish Day of Victory
Lvov Lvov UKRAINE, Lvov. (Our Correspondent) On May 29, Prime Minister of Ukraine Yulia Timoshenko condemned the resolution of the Lvov Town Council canceling the celebration of the Day of Victory over Fascist Germany in Lvov. Lvov deputies requesed that President Victor Yushenko abolish the celebration of the Day of Victory (May 9) throughout all Ukraine.
Timoshenko considers the holiday to be a celebration of the Ukrainian people, and believes it must remain a significant date. The deputies of the Lvov Town Council proposed to Victor Yushenko that he introduce new holidays connected with Cossack traditions and the military operations of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA). The deputies’ proposals are supported by nationalist organizations.
Victor Yushenko has not yet expressed himself concerning the initiative of the Lvov Town Council. On May 9, 2008, in his appearance before war veterans, he attempted to reconcile them with the soldiers of the UPA, but was booed.
