NALCHIK (Kabardino-Balkaria), July 5 (Itar-Tass) -- Two mountain brigades, which are being formed in the North Caucasus, will prevent attempts of terrorists to penetrate from Georgia into Russia, Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov said in an answer to Itar-Tass on Tuesday.
“Our plans to form two mountain brigades in Dagestan and Karachayevo-Cherkessia result from the complicated situation on the Russian-Georgian border and the absence of an efficient border protection system,” he said.
“The brigades are bound to give assistance to border guards in case of terrorist incursions through the Russian-Georgian border. We will do our best to protect the border and destroy any terrorists immediately,” the minister said.
“2.4 billion rubles have been assigned from the Russian budget” to finance the formation of the mountain brigades, Ivanov said.
The brigades will be completely different from motorized infantry units, he said. “They will have special armaments and modern helicopters. The brigades will be staffed by contract at 100%,” Ivanov added.
