Only Happy Evictees Allowed to Meet with Putin

Residents of the Imeretinskaya Valley who are angry over being evicted from their homes to make way for Olympic facility construction were barred from a meeting between Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and other evicted residents, Nezavisimaya Gazeta reported on Thursday.

The prime minister arrived in the Black Sea city of Sochi on Wednesday to check on preparations for the 2014 Winter Olympics. As part of his visit, Putin inspected housing being built for the evicted Imeretinskaya residents – approximately one thousand families coming from 628 houses and 369 apartments.

The residents have been protesting the unfair conditions of their eviction for years, holding demonstrations, hunger strikes, and filing suits with the European Court of Human Rights. The complaints range from the unlawful basis of the evictions to unfair compensation for their confiscated property.

At the same time, Prime Minister Putin has assured officials ...

Russia plans Formula-1 track in Sochi

15.10.2010, 01.32

SOCHI, October 15 (Itar-Tass) -- Russia plans to build its Formula-1 racing track in Imereti Valley in Sochi where Winter Olympics are to be held in 2014, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said on Thursday.

Due to the construction of road infrastructure for Olympic Games in Imereti Valley the Formula-1 project will be much cheaper, according to the prime minister.

"This is much cheaper than building in green field,” Putin said.

On Thursday Formula-1 President Berni Ecclestone signed a contract with Omega construction company in Krasnodar region, two which Sochi belongs, on the organization of the race which is planned in the Black Sea spa from 2014.

Russia initially planned to build a Formula-1 track in Moscow, then nearby Moscow, and in St. Petersburg.

But Putin said none of the places have any chance.

"We shall hardly build two tracks for Formula-1,” he said.

Putin said Olympic objects will be used for racing ...

Window on Eurasia: Circassians Increase Efforts to Secure Recognition of 1864 Genocide

Paul Goble

Staunton, October 7 – The Circassian community is intensifying its efforts to gain international recognition for the Russian killing of their ancestors in 1864 in Sochi where Moscow wants to hold the Olympic Games in 2014, the 150th anniversary of those horrific events.
Last week, Circassians continued to lobby the Georgian parliament, many of whose members appear prepared to hold the Russian Empire responsible for the events of 1864 and to give Moscow a black eye in advance of the planned Olympiad. But in addition and, perhaps to greater effect, the Circassians asked the Estonians to push their cause in European institutions.
The International Circassian Council turned over to members of the Estonian parliament in Tallinn an appeal for assistance and then in Brussels met with Indrek Tarand, an Estonian representative to the European Paarliament as well ...

THE INDEPENDENT: Let Our Fame Be Great, By Oliver Bullough

Site of a forgotten genocide? The Russian Black Sea resort of Sochi

Oliver Bullough's title quotes a prayer of the Narts, mythical ancestors of the Caucasus tribes. They thirsted for a short, glorious life, rather than a long one spent in comfortable obscurity, but were denied both options. This remarkable book shows how their descendants have been similarly - though infinitely more cruelly - cursed.

Bullough takes us to a village near the Black Sea resort of Sochi where the Winter Olympics will be held in 2014, and observes that on this spot in 1864 the Russian army completed its genocide of the local Circassian tribe. "What if one of the candidates to host the Olympic Games had been Auschwitz-Birkenau?' asked a group from the Circassian diaspora (getting no reply from the IOC).

Who now knows about the Circassians? ...
