Russian Rights Activist Battles On In Chechnya

by Gregory Feifer

Nothing about Kheda Saratova's demeanor indicated the nature of her work when I first met her in Grozny five years ago.

She was escorting a group of rights activists to her native district of Shatoi, a lush stretch in the Caucasus Mountains in which some of the most protracted fighting in Chechnya had taken place.

Sunny and smiling, her elegant features crowned by dark bangs under a head scarf set back on her head, Saratova betrayed none of the hell she'd lived through. Umarov Names New Daghestan Front Commander

Magomedali Vagabov (right) was killed on August 21 after only five weeks in command.

September 01, 2010
Self-styled leader of the Caucasus emirate Doku Umarov named a commander from southern Daghestan on August 30 to succeed Magomedali Vagabov (aka Seyfullakh Gubdensky) as emir of the Daghestan front. Vagabov had occupied that post for only five weeks before being killed on August 21 in a counterterrorism operation in the village of Gunib in central Daghestan.

Vagabov's successor is Israpil Velidjanov (Emir Khasan), whom then-Daghestan Interior Minister Lieutenant General Adilgirey Magomedtagirov identified in March last year as one of the republic's four most experienced militant leaders.

Velidjanov was named emir of the Derbent jamaat in southern Daghestan in October 2008. That fighting unit came to prominence only during the early months of that year.  In July 2009, they launched a high-profile attack on the Derbent city police headquarters, killing two police officers and injuring four more.

To judge from a video clip of Velidjanov ...

MOSCOW, September 2 (Itar-Tass) -- Chief of the Federal Security Service department in the Tsumadi district in Dagestan Ahmed Abdullayev was killed in a blast of his service car in the republic. He died of wounds received in the car blast. A policeman, who chased down the suspected killers, was injured, spokesman for the Prosecutor General’s Office Investigation Committee (SKP) Vladimir Markin told Itar-Tass on Thursday.

Unidentified gunmen blasted Abdullayev’s service car at 8 am Moscow time on Thursday in the village Agavali, Markin noted. According to preliminary reports, the car was blasted at the moment, when the FSB officer was getting in the car near his house to drive for a work. "A policeman turned out to be nearby heard the blast and coming up to the car noticed two unidentified bandits, who were trying to escape,” Markin said. "To the ...
