Three militants were killed in Dagestan late on Friday in a shootout with police, a spokesman for the republic's interior ministry said on Saturday, RIA Novosti. reported.

"Officers of the special purpose police unit clashed with militants while doing investigative work in the Karabudakhkent district. Three militants were killed. No deaths or injuries among officers have been reported," the source said.

The bodies of the militants are currently being identified.

Russia's mainly Muslim North Caucasus republics, especially Chechnya, Dagestan and Ingushetia, have seen an upsurge of militant violence lately, with attacks usually focusing on police and officials.

In a separate development, two people were injured in two unrelated incidents in Dagestan.

A member of a local electoral commission was hospitalized with gunshot wounds after being attacked by a group of assailants in his house.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev last week vented his exasperation with the two men he appointed at the beginning of this year to key positions in the North Caucasus for their failure to stabilize Daghestan, where attacks by Islamic militants now take place almost on a daily basis.

Whether either North Caucasus Federal District head Aleksandr Khloponin or Daghestan President Magomedsalam Magomedov is capable of bringing about the swift improvement in the situation that Medvedev wants is more than questionable, however. Indeed, one expert recently suggested that "we have already lost the ideological battle with the Islamists," implying that the republic is headed inexorably toward implosion.

Daghestan is the largest of the North Caucasus republics, with a population of some 2.6 million-3 ...

Staunton, August 21 – There are 14 titular nationalities in the North Caucasus republic of Daghestan, but most people refer to the existence of 30 different ethnic groups there --while some say there is no reason not to report a far larger number, differences that have serious political consequences that are attracting attention as the 2010 Russian census approaches.
Last week in Makhachkala, experts and officials met to discuss plans for a partial, preliminary census involving some 56,000 people (two percent of the republic’s population) who live in some of the most inaccessible mountain regions of the republic. That enumeration will take place August 26 to October 20, mostly before the all-Russia count of October 14-20.

Unknown assailants opened fire on a car in the town of Kaspiisk in Russia's North Caucasus republic of Dagestan late on Sunday, injuring two people, a law enforcement officer told RIA Novosti.

"One police officer and one civilian were hospitalized with gunshot wounds after their car was shot at at about 23:20 Moscow time at the intersection of the Ordzhonikidze Street and Makhachkalinskoye Highway," the officer said.

An investigation is underway.

Sporadic terrorist attacks and militant clashes are common in Russia's largely Muslim North Caucasus republics, especially Dagestan, Chechnya and Ingushetia.

Two Explosions Rock Dagestan's Capital


MONDAY, 16 AUGUST 2010

explosions rocked the capital of Russia's North Caucasus republic of Dagestan early on Monday, no one was injured, a police spokesman reported.

"An unidentified explosive device went off in Makhachkala on Magomedtagirova Street near a pizzeria," the spokesman said.

 

"Another explosion resounded on the same street in a few minutes when law enforcers were heading to the site," he said, adding that a police vehicle was damaged.

An investigation is underway.

Sporadic terrorist attacks and militant clashes are common in Russia's largely Muslim North Caucasus republics, especially Dagestan, Chechnya and Ingushetia.

The Kremlin has pledged to wage "a ruthless fight" against militant groups but also acknowledged a need to tackle unemployment, organized crime, clan rivalry and corruption as causes of the ongoing violence in the region.
