High-ranking Russian official murdered in Dagestan

high-ranking official was shot dead in Russia's volatile republic of Dagestan early Thursday, local media reported.

Garun Kurbanov, head of Dagestan's analytical department and presidential press service, and his driver were killed in the republic's capital city of Makhachkala.

"Unidentified gunmen opened fire on Kurbanov's car at about 08:15 Moscow time (0415 GMT). According to preliminary reports, the official and his driver were killed," a spokesman of Dagestan's Interior Ministry was quoted by Interfax news agency as saying.

Russia's Investigative Committee spokesman Vladimir Markin told Interfax that Kurbanov's murder may be linked to his work.

"Investigators are analyzing different theories behind this crime. However, our main theory is that it was related to his work," Markin said.

Investigation into the incident is underway.

Violence is common in the North Caucasus republics of Chechnya, Dagestan and Ingushetia, with militants frequently attacking police and authority targets.

MOSCOW (BNO NEWS) -- At least six people were killed when a gunfight between militants and federal forces broke out in Russia's restive North Caucasus republic of Dagestan, police said on Wednesday.

The state-run RIA Novosti news agency reported that two civilians, a serviceman, and two suspected militants were killed during the shootout that occurred late on Wednesday. Another serviceman and six civilians were wounded. An assault rifle and a handgun were seized from the site of the clash.


"According to the latest reports, one serviceman and two civilians have been killed in a shootout in the village of Serebryakovka [near the city of Kizlyar]. One more servicemen and six civilians were wounded," a police spokesman said.

One of the two militants killed in the gunfight was identified as gang leader Magomed Aliyev. A local police source said ...
