Two police officers suffered injuries during a raid by special forces in Russia's North Caucasus republic of Dagestan, said a regional Interior Ministry official Thursday.
The ongoing operation has pinned down three gunmen in the city of Khasavyurt, said the official, adding that wounded officers have been taken to hospital.
Earlier in the day head of a local village in Dagestan was reportedly shot to death.
Violence is common in Russia's mainly Muslim North Caucasus republics, especially Chechnya, Dagestan and Ingushetia, with militants frequently targeting police and officials as representatives of Russian authorities.
A police officer has been killed in the volatile Russian republic of Dagestan, a local police spokesman said on Sunday, RIA Novosti reported.
The incident occurred at about 1:30 a.m. local time on Sunday in Khasavyurt when unidentified assailants opened fire at a car of the police officer of the Novolaksky district interior department who died from shot wounds, the spokesman said.
Sporadic attacks on troops and police officials are common in Russia's southern mainly Muslim republics in the North Caucasus, especially Dagestan, Chechnya, and Ingushetia.
On June 29, Dagestan’s President, Magomedsalam Magomedov, delivered his first annual presidential address to the parliament and people of the republic. Magomedov described the contemporary situation in the republic as "complicated, problematic and even prone to crisis.” He tried to strike a balance between criticizing the law enforcement agencies and condemning the insurgency. Citing the precarious security situation in the republic, Magomedov proclaimed that corrupt and incompetent policemen as well as other state officials were in fact insurgent accomplices. He called on insurgents to surrender, saying that "the quantity of the liquidated fighters cannot be an indicator of success.” According to Magomedov, 99 terrorist attacks and 743 attacks on law enforcement agents have been carried out since 2000, as a result of which 420 servicemen died and 696 were injured. Cargo train derails after bombing in Russia's Dagestan

Ten cars of cargo train derailed on Friday after bombing by unidentified men in the North Caucasian republic of Dagestan, the Itar-Tass news agency reported.
The incident occurred at 05:10 Moscow time (0110 GMT) on the 2,321-km-long Manas-Achi rail track, the Itar-Tass quoted the local railway department as saying.
The department said the incident which derailed the Derbent-bound train was a result of a sabotage.
An investigation is underway. The authorities are also taking measures to restore the interrupted railway traffic.
