Railway and Hydroelectric Engineer Targeted in Dagestan

Attacks apparently carried out by insurgents and attacking infrastructure have been reported in Dagestan in the wake of the daring attack earlier this week on the Baksan hydropower station in Kabardino-Balkaria.


Russian news agencies reported that an improvised explosive device (IED) went off today (July 23) on the Inchkhe-Kayakent railway in Dagestan, wounding a security guard. According to the reports, the incident took place as a train was passing by. The train was not derailed, but around two meters of track was destroyed. A police source was later quoted as saying that the explosion on the railway was actually a controlled explosion carried out by authorities to destroy an IED they found on the railway, and that no one was hurt in the incident. Five Reported Dead In Daghestan Violence


Reports from Russia say five people, including a village leader, have been killed in separate shoot-outs in Daghestan.

Interfax quoted police as saying assailants gunned down Rasul Magomedov, the head of the Chernyaevka village in the north of the region, outside his home.

Earlier, a police officer was reported killed and four civilians wounded when gunmen opened fire on a bus.

Meanwhile, RIA Novosti news agency reported that three soliders were killed in a gunbattle about 40 kilometers southwest of Daghestan's capital, Makhachkala.

Moscow is trying to contain a growing Islamist insurgency in its North Caucasus republics.

Bombing On Railroad In Daghestan



A bomb exploded on the North Caucasus rail line in Daghestan on July 15 damaging a locomotive and two freight cars carrying sand but causing no casualties. 
July 15, 2010

The explosion happened at 4:50 local time, temporarily suspending traffic on the Makhachkala-Derbent line. 

Investigators and sappers are at the scene searching for clues and any other explosives that might be on or along the tracks.

One Policeman Killed, Two Wounded In Shootout In Daghestan



Daghestan's Interior Ministry says one policeman was killed and two people were injured in a drive-by shooting in the republic's capital Makhachkala on July 12. July 12, 2010


The ministry said unidentified attackers opened fire on police at a checkpoint. 

Two policemen were injured, one later died of his wounds in the hospital. 

The driver of a vehicle police had stopped at the checkpoint was also injured. 

The attack comes after a district court judge was shot dead in his car and bomb blasts injured two policemen and also derailed a cargo train over the weekend in the restive North Caucasus republic. 

Russia is struggling to quash an Islamic insurgency in the North Caucasus, which also includes Chechnya and Ingushetia.

Judge Shot Dead, Two Police Injured In Daghestan


A judge has been shot dead and two police officers injured in two separate incidents in Russia's North Caucasus region of Daghestan.July 11, 2010

Authorities said the body of Magomed Khasbulatov, with gunshot wounds, was found in his car on the evening of July 10 in Makhachkala. 

The two officers were reported injured in an explosion this morning in the city.
