HRW: Dagestan: A 'Wahhabi' Village

posted by eagle on June, 2009 as DAGESTAN

Tanya Lokshina, Deputy Director of Human Rights Watch's Moscow Office

June 9, 2009

There is never a quiet moment in Dagestan. There are all the ‘counterterrorism' operations, when entire houses are destroyed and helicopters fire away into mountain gorges. There are explosions in the streets, and finding bombs that have not gone off yet has become a routine event. Dagestan provides a lot of news, none of it any good. And yet, few people really understand what is happening there. It is hard to get an objective picture of events in such a complex place, home to more than 30 ethnic groups, speaking numerous languages. Gudben is a village with something of a reputation. People outside and inside Dagestan say that this village, in the Karabudakhkent District, is a ‘Wahhabi' ...

Dagestani weekly accused of “extremism”

Posted on the June 16th, 2009 under Civic ActionHuman RightsRussian Opposition by Kerkko Paananen

Authorities in Russia’s republic of Dagestan are trying to close down an opposition weekly under charges of “extremism.” The republic’s supreme court is examining charges against the weekly Chernovik, accused of “inciting hatred” against law enforcement officials. The charges relate to an article titles “Terrorists Number One”, published in July 2008, which contained quotes from Rappani Khalilov, former leader of the Shariat Jamaat in Dagestan. Chernovik is one of Dagestan’s most popular newspapers and the third-largest newspaper in terms of circulation.
