Published on April 12, 2011

MAKHACHKALA, Russia - An Interior Ministry official in Russia's restive province of Dagestan says two police officers have been killed and three wounded in an ambush.

Vyacheslav Gasanov said a police convoy was attacked early Tuesday on a forest road in the Tsumadi region. The convoy was returning after a security raid that followed Monday's killing of three police officers.

Gasanov said unidentified gunmen also killed a fortune teller in the town of Kaspiysk late Monday.

Dagestan and other provinces in Russia's North Caucasus have been destabilized by an Islamic insurgency that has spread following two separatist wars in nearby Chechnya.

Sergei Morozov, an Interior Ministry spokesman for the Caucasus region, said a suspected militant was killed and another one detained Monday in the province of Ingushetia.

MAKHACHKALA, Russia (Reuters) - At least three policemen and three suspected Islamist militants were killed in clashes in Russia's North Caucasus on Monday, media reported, underlining the Kremlin's struggle to contain violence there.

A decade after Russian federal forces drove separatists out of power in Chechnya, almost daily violence plagues the mainly Muslim North Caucasus where rebels want to establish an Islamic state under strict sharia law.

"The police returned fire at a group of militants, killing two of them," national anti-terror committee spokesman Nikolai Sintsov said on the state-run Rossiya 24 television channel, adding that those clashes took place in the Dagestan region.

He added that at least three policemen were also killed in the village of Kidero near Dagestan's western border with Chechnya. Dagestan is a multi-ethnic republic on the Caspian Sea considered the heart of the insurgency.

MAKHACHKALA, Russia - Police in Russia's southern province of Dagestan say gunmen have killed a local imam.

Police spokesman Vyacheslav Gasanov says the two attackers fired gunshots into the window of the imam's home in Yasnaya Polyana village, killing him Saturday.

Nikolai Sintsov, a spokesman for Russia's Anti-Terrorist Committee, blamed Islamic militants for the killing, saying the imam had denounced them.

Dagestan and other provinces in Russia's North Caucasus have been destabilized by an Islamic insurgency that has spread following two separatist wars in nearby Chechnya.

Dagestan has emerged as the militants' main base, and they regularly attack police and other authorities. Many moderate local imams oppose radical Islam, leaving them vulnerable to assassinations.

Armed Attacks Reported in Dagestan

Publication: Eurasia Daily Monitor
April 8, 2011 01:26 PM

Violence continued in parts of the North Caucasus - particularly in Dagestan – this past week despite the major blow dealt to the North Caucasus rebels by a counter-insurgency operation in which 17 militants were killed. There were reports that Doku Umarov, the Chechen rebel leader and "emir” of the Caucasus Emirate, was killed along with his wife, doctor and several close associates in that operation, which took place on March 28 in the village of Verkhny Alkun in Ingushetia’s Sunzha district. The rebels denied Umarov and his wife were killed in that operation, but they did confirm that Supyan Abdullaev, a top rebel commander and Umarov’s designated successor, was killed in the operation (www.kavkaz-uzel.ru, April 4; EDM, April 7). Today (April 8), the Kavkazsky Uzel website quoted a source in Russia’s special services as saying that ...
