Officer Killed Demining Gas Pipeline In DaghestanApril 11, 2009 MOZDOK, Dagestan -- An explosion on the Mozdok-Kazimagomed natural-gas pipeline in the Russian republic of Daghestan has killed a local law enforcement officer, RFE/RL's Russian Service reports.
The explosion occurred on April 10 during demining work along the pipeline. Two mines found on the pipeline apparently had timing devices.
The deminers used a robot to defuse the second mine.
Daghestan is one of the more volatile regions in Russia's North Caucasus.

During demining one of them, a sapper was lost. On February 27, a terror act was prevented on that very gas main. The security service of the "Kaspijgazprom" Company detected a black bag, half-hidden with ground, with wires protruding out. FSB agents and sappers confirmed in situ the presence of an explosive. Then, demining was successful. The dispatcher of the Company "Gazpromtransgaz-Makhachkala" has reported that today explosives were detected in the 590th and 591st kilometres in the course of a detour of the security service at 6:20 a.m., as the ITAR-TASS reports. MAKHACHKALA, April 10 (RIA Novosti) - A sapper died early on Friday in an explosion during a mine-clearing operation in Russia's North Caucasus Republic of Daghestan, a source in the republic's Interior Ministry said. The blast occurred when the bomb expert was removing a homemade explosive device from a gas pipeline some 30 km (19 miles) to the south of the Daghestani capital, Makhachkala. "When he [the sapper] began removing the bomb an explosion occurred. The sapper died at the scene," the source said. Bomb experts are searching for more bombs planted in the area. Sporadic terrorist attacks and militant clashes are common in Daghestan, and in neighboring Chechnya, although the Kremlin has officially ended its military campaign against separatists and terrorists there.

In Dagestan, a local resident killed and two militiamen wounded
On April 8, in the Karabudakhkent District of Dagestan, unidentified persons wounded two employees of the road police service, and then, trying to escape the chase, killed a local resident.
Earlier, it was reported that late at night on April 8, unidentified persons in Khasavyurt wounded from a pistol an employee of the State Drugs Control Service.
As reported by a source in law enforcement bodies of the republic, on Wednesday, April 8, at 11:35 p.m. in the 830th kilometre of the "Kavkaz" Federal Highway at the "Butri" Fuelling Station, road police employees stopped a BMW car to check documents. According to "Gazeta.Ru", the driver and passenger opened fire on militiamen, having wounded two inspectors, then, having left the car, tried to escape the chase.

With the participation of Swedish oil industrialist Ludvig Nobel, several relatively shallow oil wells were operating in Dagestan by the end of that century (http://www.caspiy.net/dir3/west/3.html). Yet it was only in the 1920s that systematic studies of the geology of the foothill areas began in earnest, and in 1924 the drilling of deep exploratory wells commenced. In 1936 the first trainload of oil left the Izberbash railway station. In January 1937, in accordance with the order issued by the People’s Commissar of Heavy Industry Sergo Ordzhonikidze, the Dagneft Trust was established.
