New War Zone Emerges in Southern Dagestan

Publication: North Caucasus Weekly
March 27, 2009 01:51 PM

Reports about armed encounters have been streaming in from Dagestan for the past week. For three days, the Russian army jointly with the Federal Security Service (FSB) and Dagestan’s Interior Ministry carried out a military operation aimed at eliminating a group of militants in the vicinity of the village of Kakashura in Dagestan’s Karabudakhkentsky district. The district is located 30 kilometers to the south of the republic’s capital, Makhachkala, and southeast of the town of Buinaksk, meaning that it lies in the direction of the Caspian Sea.

The aforementioned military operation allegedly began after a traffic police patrol car came under attack in the Derbentsky district (in the southern part of Dagestan on the border with Azerbaijan). During the incident, which occurred on March 18, at about ten in the evening local time, a police officer was ...

At least five soldiers and several anti-government fighters have been killed in clashes in Russia's southern Dagestan region.

Clashes between government security forces and armed opposition groups started on Thursday in the Karabudakhkentsky district, about 30km south of the regional capital Makhachkala.

"This is the third day of a special operation to rid the area of militants," Takhir Ramazanov, the deputy head of Dagestan's internal ministry, told Russia's state-run Vesti-24 television on Saturday.

"It has become clear they have fled to the mountains."

The bodies of 10 fighters were reportedly found after security forces pounded their positions using mortars and helicopter gunships. Four others were shot dead as they drove their car through Makhachkala late on Friday.

Vesti-24 showed four bodies lying among shattered glass near a battered, white Lada car.

Ramazanov said the men in the car had been involved in ...

Alekseeva: although roundtable in Dagestan was a "lumpy pancake" the dialogue should be continued

mar 19 2009, 19:00

The meeting of the head of Dagestan Mukhu Aliev with Russian human rights defenders and members of the Commission of the Public Chamber of the Russian Federation for Interethnic Relations and Freedom of Conscience on March 10, as well as subsequent public hearings, was not senseless; the time will define the effect thereof. This was told to the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent by Liudmila Alekseeva, chair of the Moscow Helsinki Group.

In the opinion of Ms Alekseeva, the good thing with the roundtable was that it was attended by all the republic's bosses, including the President, and at the same - by NGO activists. However, the latter were mainly from "authorities-friendly" organizations.

Nevertheless, under the request of the delegation, the partners of the Moscow Helsinki Group were admitted, in particular, "Mothers of Dagestan" and the "Relief Fund ...
