Police Chief Among 16 Dead In North Caucasus Violence

MAKHACHKALA, Russia (Reuters) -- The police chief of the southern Russian city of Makhachkala was shot dead in his car on February 5, one of 16 people killed in a string of attacks in the mainly Muslim North Caucasus.February 06, 2010

At least six insurgents and five Russian troops were killed in gun battles in the mountains of Chechnya, while five people were killed in attacks in Makhachkala, capital of neighboring Dagestan, officials said.

Near-daily attacks in Chechnya, Ingushetia, and Daghestan, mostly targeting law enforcement and government officials, have alarmed the Kremlin in recent months.

President Dmitry Medvedev has called the violence Russia's biggest domestic political problem and last month appointed a businessman as his envoy to the region to tackle underlying causes such as unemployment and corruption.

City police chief Akhmed Magomedov was killed along with his driver and two bodyguards when gunmen opened fire ...

Winter won't become a time for rest. Mujahideen hitting and attacking

Successful special operation has been carried out by the Mujahideen in Dagestan in a day. Pinpoint strikes have been conducted against high-ranking targets in Shamilkala (former Makhachkala) and in Izberbash village.

Lt. Col. Gapiz Isaev, a so-called ringleader of "Inter-district department for combating extremism", gang has been eliminated in Izberbash village. The apostate was eliminated around 10.30 am local time on Friday.

He was blown up in the Lermontov Street, near a market place, when Isayev's Niva car was passing by. Isayev died of wounds right on the spot.

Exactly 10 hours after a successful special operation in Izberbash, a car with a ringleader of "city police department" gang, Colonel Akhmed Magomedov, has come under fire the capital of Province of Dagestan, Shamilkala.

Magomedov's Volga sedan car came under fire in Akushinsky Avenue at about 22:00 local time.
