Window on Eurasia: Russian Attitudes Returning to Those of 1990s -- But Russian Politics Isn’t

Paul Goble

New York, December 29 – Three articles in the Moscow media today – one by Levada Center director Lev Gudkov, a second on the Liberty.ru site, and a third by the editors of “Nezavisimaya gazeta” – show that Russian popular attitudes are returning to those of the 1990s but that Russian opposition figures have proved unable to exploit that reality.
And that combination, all three suggest, may allow both the Russian people and the Russian powers that be to survive the current crisis, but it will not, all three make clear, allow Russia to develop as a democracy and thus prevent a further degeneration of its political and social system.
Writing in today’s “Vedomosti,” Gudkov argues that “the current crisis shows that the political system established in the last decade in Russia is restraining ...

Window on Eurasia: Could the Deteriorating Situation in Daghestan Again Trigger a Wider War?

Paul Goble

New York, December 29 – According to a Daghestani analyst, “the campaign to destabilize” his republic both from within and without “is gathering force and is no longer under the control of either the Kremlin or Makhachkala,” a situation that means “private political games could lead to the largest armed conflict in the North Caucasus in the 21st century.”
In a comment posted on the Polit.ru portal today, Magomed Suleymanov catalogues some of the murky events of the last few weeks in that North Caucasus republic that was both a casus belli in 1999 and that because of the nature of its population could now lead to an even larger conflict with more parties involved (www.polit.ru/news/2009/12/29/dgstn.html).
A few days ago, Suleymanov notes, the FSB “accused” Tbilisi of preparing “a diversionary-terrorist group” that it planned to ...

Jamaat 'Shariah': Our goal is to establish a fair society

Publication time: 22 December 2009, 13:38

All praise be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds, peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah and his companions, all those who follow them!

Today, with Muslim Ummah waking up from sleep, Insha Allah, a day is coming when a truly Sharia state is established. For this purpose, the Jihad is being fought as a highest form of struggle on the way of Allah.

Nevertheless, many Muslims do not always correctly understand the goals and objectives set by the Jamaat. Many are sincerely misled believing that a compromise is possible by conciliation with the State of kufr .

"Surely the guidance of Allah, that is the (true) guidance, and we are commanded that we should submit to the Lord of the worlds."

(the Koran, 6/71)

War Jihad as it is is not the final purpose of our Jamaat. ...

The Security Situation in Dagestan Continues to Deteriorate

Publication: Eurasia Daily Monitor Volume: 6 Issue: 223

Daghestani President Mukhu Aliev.

The situation in Dagestan, one of the largest republics in North Caucasus, has remained markedly tense. Along with the problem of armed resistance, there are several other burning issues, inter-ethnic tensions being one of them. This issue becomes especially sensitive for the people of Dagestan during elections. A huge scandal erupted during the October 11 municipal elections in the city of Derbent in southern Dagestan, where the local residents were electing their mayor. The head of the elections committee, Murad Muradov, was kidnapped on the eve of the elections (www.grani.ru , October 11). Also, due to friction between supporters and opponents incumbent Derbent Mayor Felix Kaziahmedov, only 20 out of 36 polling stations opened on election day, but even they operated erratically (www.regnum.ru, October 11). ...

Local Court Rules Against United Russia Electoral Victory in Dagestani City

Publication: Eurasia Daily Monitor

Russian authorities detaining activists in Moscow protesting the Derbent elections.

On December 3, the Derbent city court in Dagestan annulled the mayoral elections that took place on October 11. The decision was astonishing news, given that Felix Kaziahmedov the incumbent mayor of Derbent and a member of the pro-Kremlin United Russia party, had been announced the winner (www.kavkaz-uzel.ru, December 3).

The October 2009 elections in Derbent were considered to be among the most fraudulent elections in Russia in the past several years. Of the 39 polling stations in the city, 13 did not open at all and three worked only part time on election day due to pressure from the government authorities. For the first time in Russia’s recent history, voters at some polling stations were openly prevented from casting their votes by the ...
