In Dagestan, missing resident found murdered

Nov 20 2010, 16:00

Khanifat Gichueva, a resident of the Chernyaevka village, Kizlyar District of Dagestan, told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent that her husband Sheikhulislam Abusupyanov, who disappeared on November 18, was found dead.

"His body was found on the bank of the Terek River with numerous gunshot wounds and traces of torture. Now, the body is in the morgue, and my husband's brother went to take it," said the woman.

"My husband left in his car for Kizlyar with documents for the Technical Inventory Bureau. A few hours later I called him by phone, but nobody answered. I made many calls later, but with the same result. He didn't come home by the night. Then I called Sheikhulislam's relatives; and they visited all the militia stations, but were told that nobody knew about Sheikhulislam's whereabouts. My husband's brother filed an application to the district prosecutor," she said.

Khanifat Gichueva added that her ...

Window on Eurasia: New Problems Arise with Formation of National Units in Daghestan

Paul Goble

Vienna, November 16 – Plans to form MVD units consisting of members of local nationalities in Daghestan appear to have slowed because of a lack of funding for infrastructure such as housing, an indication that this program may neither have the priority that its backers had suggested or achieve its goals as soon or as completely as they had hoped.
General Nikolay Rogozhkin, Russia’s deputy minister of internal affairs, announced yesterday the completion of what he described as the first stage of the formation of a specialized motorized MVD battalion whose soldiers are drawn from the non-Russian nationalities of Daghestan (www.kavkaz-uzel.ru/articles/177011/).
Rogozhkin said that the MVD had "completed the formation of this separate 300-man battalion, that it is "included in the military staff of the Daghestani Ministry of Internal Affairs to guarantee security in Makhachkala and ...

Dagestan Tries to Win Popular Support for Its Struggle with Insurgents

Publication: Eurasia Daily Monitor

On November 2, Dagestan’s President, Magomedsalam Magomedov, signed a decree to set up a commission for the social rehabilitation of former militants. The commission is designed to help militants who wish to return to peaceful life re-integrate into society. Only three of the commission’s 14 members –the head of the republican lawyers’ chamber and two Muslim clergymen– are not part of Dagestani officialdom (www.riadagestan.ru, November 2).

The commission appears to have been assembled in a hurried and unsystematic manner. The head of the Muslim movement Ahlu-s-sunna, Abbas Kebedov, said he learned about his inclusion in the commission from the media and was cautious about its prospects. The well-known Dagestani poet and writer Adallo opined that the commission was created at the behest of Moscow, which makes its usefulness questionable. Lawyer Ziyavdin Uvaisov dismissed ...

MOSCOW (AFP) - – Gunmen on Thursday killed at least seven Russian police officers in a shooting rampage in the turbulent North Caucasus region of Dagestan, news agencies quoted police as saying.

Police chased the assailants, and blocked their vehicle, which ignited and exploded in the resultant shooting. Four gunmen were killed, RIA Novosti reported.

The attackers had stolen a car in Dagestan's capital Makhachkala before shooting police on duty in two locations in the city centre, killing six on the spot. Another later died of his wounds.

"According to our revised figures, the two attacks occurred on Thursday afternoon," resulting in the death of six traffic police officers, the RIA Novosti news agency quoted officials as saying.
