Special Ops Leader Killed In Russia's Daghestan

MOSCOW (Reuters) -- Masked men have shot dead a senior police officer in the Russian region of Daghestan, Russian news agencies reported.

The head of the mainly Muslim region's special operations unit, Lieutenant Colonel Shapi Aligadzhiyev, died after two men shot him with pistols today outside his apartment, ITAR-TASS news agency reported, quoting a police official.

Mounting turbulence in the North Caucasus has become a major headache for the Kremlin, sparking fears that the violence could spill over into other parts of Russia.

On November 19, United Russia party leader Boris Gryzlov presented five candidates for the position of president of Dagestan to President Dmitry Medvedev. The candidates include the current leader of Dagestan, Mukhu Aliev; the deputy head of the Dagestani government, Magomed Abdullaev; an advisor to the chairman of Russia’s Federation Council Magomed Magomedov; Dagestani parliamentary deputy Magomedsalam Magomedov; and the head of Russia’s treasury branch in Dagestan, Saigidgusein Magomedov. All candidates except the current head of Dagestan are members of United Russia, although Gryzlov in his talk with Medvedev dubbed the Mukhu Aliev as “a supporter of the United Russia party” (ITAR-TASS, November 19).

Mujahideen eliminated ringleader of Dagestan's 'special task force police unit'

The ringleader of "Interior Ministry's special task force police unit" gang was eliminated on Thursday morning in the capital of Dagestan. The police ringleader was shot dead as he was leaving his apartment in a dormitory in Akushinsky Street of the capital Shamilkala (former Makhachkala).

 

Shapi Aligadzhiyev was head of one of the bloodiest puppet gangs in a rank of lieutenant colonel. It is reported that two Mujahideen approached the apostate and opened pistol fire on him.

 

Initially, it was reported that Aligadzhiyev was injured. He was taken to hospital in a coma, but doctors there said that apostate is already dead.

 

In response apostates announced that they "have arranged a hunt for the attackers". Puppet sources claim that one of the Mujahideen is allegedly killed and another is wounded. "The wounded gunman is hiding", the apostates claim.

MAKHACHKALA,  - Violence in three separate provinces of Russia's restive North Caucasus on Thursday left three people dead, law enforcement authorities said - one senior police officer, one suspected militant and one bystander.

The chief of a riot police unit in Dagestan, on the Caspian Sea east of war-scarred Chechnya, was shot by two gunmen as he headed to work in the provincial capital Makhachkala, provincial Interior Ministry spokesman Mark Tolchinsky said.

In Ingushetia, west of Chechnya, security forces killed a suspected militant in a gunbattle in a wooded area, said Ilyas Dugov, spokesman for the regional branch of the Federal Security Service. He said another gunman was wounded but avoided capture

On November 10, President of Dagestan Mukhu Aliev, speaking to the workers of internal bodies on the occasion of the Day of Militia, said that law enforcement bodies will be regarded as involved in kidnappings themselves until the solve the crime and find real kidnappers.

According to Mr Aliev, kidnappings are shameful phenomena casting a shadow not only on law enforcement bodies, but on the whole republic.

The President has noted that in recent years the republic has managed to decrease the number of kidnappings.
