Russian Interior Minister Rashid Nurgaliyev visited on Friday the site of a recent deadly suicide bombing in Makhachkala, the capital of Russia's North Caucasus republic of Dagestan.

Wednesday's attack, which took the lives of five police officers, saw a suicide bomber attempt to drive a car into a traffic police depot. The explosion occurred after the bomber's car was blocked off by a police vehicle. Eighteen police officers and 6 civilians were also wounded in the attack.

Makhachkala police chief Akhmed Magomedov told Nurgaliyev that all necessary measures were being taken to identify those involved in the attack.

On Thursday, two militants with suspected links to the attack were killed after being surrounded in a private house in the village of Kormaskala in the republic's Kumtorkalinsky District.

Nurgaliyev also visited police officers wounded in Wednesday's blast and presented them with service awards.

A bomb detonated on Thursday in the capital of the Russian North Caucasus republic of Dagestan, иге no one was injured, police said.

"An explosive device detonated on a road a police vehicle was driving along," a police spokesman said.

A source in the Dagestani Interior Ministry said the device had been placed into a garbage can on a roadside.

Russia's mainly Muslim North Caucasus republics, especially Chechnya, Dagestan and Ingushetia, have seen an upsurge of militant violence lately, with frequent attacks on police and officials.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on Wednesday ordered the Federal Security Service to tighten security in the North Caucasus following a suicide bomb attack in Dagestan that killed five people and wounded up to 19.

Suicide bombing kills 6 Russian police, wounds 16

By ARSEN MOLLAYEV
Associated Press Writer

A suicide bomber blew up an explosives-packed car at a police station in Russia's troubled North Caucasus on Wednesday, killing six officers and wounding at least 16 people, officials said.

The officers who died took action to prevent far greater devastation at the traffic police station on the outskirts of Makhachkala, the capital of Dagestan, where 150 officers were lined up outside for roll call at the time of the attack, city police chief Col. Shamil Guseinov said.

The bomber detonated the explosives at the station gate after police stopped him from driving through, Guseinov said. Those killed were at the gate, including three officers in a police jeep that blocked the attacker's path, he said.

A similar bombing in the neighboring republic of Ingushetia in August killed 24 people and injured more than 200. In that ...

No End In Sight To Daghestan Presidential Cliff-Hanger

Aliyev mobilized virtually the entire republican leadership to campaign on behalf of incumbent Derbent Mayor Feliks Kaziakhmedov, who was duly proclaimed ...
