Gas pipeline in Dagestan is blown up with an explosive device

On January 12, a major gas pipeline was blown up with an explosive device in southern Dagestan. The pipeline stretching from Mozdok in North Ossetia to Kazimagomed in Dagestan connects Russian gas pipelines to the Azeri gas pipeline network. Eleven settlements, including the city of Derbent in the southern part of the republic with the overall population of 170,000 people, were left without gas supplies (ITAR-TASS, January 12).

The attack took place days after president Dmitry Medvedev demanded that Russia’s law enforcement agencies eliminate the insurgents in Dagestan, who are thought to be behind the attacks. An already precarious security situation in Dagestan worsened after a suicide bomber attacked the transport police headquarters in Makhachkala on January 6, killing six policemen and wounding over 20.

Rebel Ideologue Vows More Frequent Attacks on “Russian Occupiers”

Publication: Eurasia Daily Monitor
January 15, 2010 04:46 PM

The year ended unexpectedly for Dagestan’s Sharia Jamaat. Completely by accident, a group of Khasavyurt city policemen encountered a car that disregarded their demands to stop. As a result of the ensuing gun battle, all four occupants of the vehicle were killed (Interfax, December 31). To the joy of the Dagestani authorities, among those killed was emir al-Bara (Umalat Magomedov), the leader of the Sharia Jamaat. Al-Bara was appointed to this position by the Chechen leader Dokka Umarov as recently as April 2009. The jamaat officially acknowledged the death of their leader just two days after the incident (www.jamaatshariat.com/ru, January 4). These days the lives of Dagestani emirs are terribly short. Thus, to replace emir Rabbani (Rappani Khalilov), who died in September 2007, emir Abdul-Madjid (Ilgar Mallachiev) was assigned. He died only one year ...

A tough choice

By Sergei Markedonov, political analyst
Moscow, Russia

In February 2010 the current term in office of Dagestan’s President Mukhu Aliyev expires. By then the Kremlin must decide if he is to remain in office for another four years, or resign.

Despite the fact that Mukhu Aliyev is a veteran of Dagestani politics (he has behind him experience as First Secretary of the Dagestan Regional Committee of the CPSU, and as Speaker of the Regional People's Assembly), he is the republic’s first president. This paradox has a simple explanation. Until February 2006 Dagestan was the last entity in the Russian Federation to lack a presidential form of government. The republic was governed by a collegiate structure, the State Council (which included representatives of 14 major ethnic communities), which from 1994 until 2006 was headed by Magomedali Magomedov, known as "the grandfather" for his ...

Pipeline Bombing In Russia's Restive Republic Cuts Gas Supply

Wednesday January 13, 2010 08:46:00 EST

(RTTNews) - A bomb attack on a pipeline in Russia's North Caucasus republic of Dagestan cut gas supplies Wednesday to more than 214,000 people living in the volatile region.

"Unidentified bandits detonated an explosive device at the 496th kilometer of the Mozdok-Kazimagomed trunk gas pipeline" Tuesday night in Dagestan's Derbent area, Russia's state-owned Itar-Tass news agency reported, quoting the dispatcher service of the Gazpromtransgaz-Makhachkala energy company.

A spokesman for the regional emergencies ministry said gas supply through the pipeline was suspended following the incident, affecting people living in 100 settlements in five rural districts of Dagestan and the city of Derbent.

The explosion caused a fire, which was extinguished by the southern regional emergencies center.

With local winter temperatures plummeting to 5-7 degrees Celsius, lack of gas supplies left people resort to electric power supplies, coal, and firewood for heating their houses.

The gas ...
