high-ranking official was shot dead in Russia's volatile republic of Dagestan early Thursday, local media reported.
Garun Kurbanov, head of Dagestan's analytical department and presidential press service, and his driver were killed in the republic's capital city of Makhachkala.
"Unidentified gunmen opened fire on Kurbanov's car at about 08:15 Moscow time (0415 GMT). According to preliminary reports, the official and his driver were killed," a spokesman of Dagestan's Interior Ministry was quoted by Interfax news agency as saying.
Russia's Investigative Committee spokesman Vladimir Markin told Interfax that Kurbanov's murder may be linked to his work.
"Investigators are analyzing different theories behind this crime. However, our main theory is that it was related to his work," Markin said.
Investigation into the incident is underway.
Violence is common in the North Caucasus republics of Chechnya, Dagestan and Ingushetia, with militants frequently attacking police and authority targets.
