Two police officers from Russia's North Caucasus republic of Dagestan died during Friday's anti- terror operation, said the National Anti-terrorist Committee.
Two militants were killed in the operation, a third has been arrested, said the committee.
The operation was carried out in the regional capital of Makhachkala on Friday evening, as police officers surrounded a private residence with several insurgents inside.
The militants started the shootout by firing at policemen and throwing grenades, said the committee.
Earlier Friday, five militants were killed in another operation conducted in the Kirovaul village of the Kizilyurtovsky region in the republic. Two police officers were slightly injured.
In another separate movement in Makhachkala, a police patrol vehicle suffered from a bomb attack on the road, causing no casualties.
Violence is common in Russia's North Caucasus republics, especially Chechnya, Dagestan and Ingushetia, with militants frequently targeting police and officials.
Moscow has said it would try its best to bring stability to the region and tackle terrorism.
