Police officer, civilian injured in North Caucasus

Unknown assailants opened fire on a car in the town of Kaspiisk in Russia's North Caucasus republic of Dagestan late on Sunday, injuring two people, a law enforcement officer told RIA Novosti.
"One police officer and one civilian were hospitalized with gunshot wounds after their car was shot at at about 23:20 Moscow time at the intersection of the Ordzhonikidze Street and Makhachkalinskoye Highway," the officer said.
An investigation is underway.
Sporadic terrorist attacks and militant clashes are common in Russia's largely Muslim North Caucasus republics, especially Dagestan, Chechnya and Ingushetia.
