Two police officers suffered injuries during a raid by special forces in Russia's North Caucasus republic of Dagestan, said a regional Interior Ministry official Thursday.
The ongoing operation has pinned down three gunmen in the city of Khasavyurt, said the official, adding that wounded officers have been taken to hospital.
Earlier in the day head of a local village in Dagestan was reportedly shot to death.
Violence is common in Russia's mainly Muslim North Caucasus republics, especially Chechnya, Dagestan and Ingushetia, with militants frequently targeting police and officials as representatives of Russian authorities.
