A police officer has been killed in the volatile Russian republic of Dagestan, a local police spokesman said on Sunday, RIA Novosti reported.
The incident occurred at about 1:30 a.m. local time on Sunday in Khasavyurt when unidentified assailants opened fire at a car of the police officer of the Novolaksky district interior department who died from shot wounds, the spokesman said.
Sporadic attacks on troops and police officials are common in Russia's southern mainly Muslim republics in the North Caucasus, especially Dagestan, Chechnya, and Ingushetia.
