Police Kill Three Suspected Insurgents In Daghestan
Security forces in the Russian republic of Daghestan, bordering Chechnya, have killed three suspected insurgents in a gunfight near the village of Bata-Yurt.May 29, 2010
A police spokesman told the Interfax news agency that men in the car opened fire on policemen, who had stopped their car for inspection late on May 28.
Police said two Kalashnikov assault rifles and four grenades were found in the car.
In a separate incident, a roadside bomb killed one police officer and wounded another in the Daghestani town of Kaspiisk.
Daghestan, along with the other North Caucasus republics of Ingushetia and Chechnya, sees frequent attacks from Islamist separatists who are seeking to break away from Moscow and create an Islamic caliphate in the region.
