At Least Two Rebels Killed In Daghestan

MAKHACHKALA -- At least two rebels were killed by Interior Ministry forces and federal military units in the Russian republic of Daghestan, RFE/RL's Russian Service reports.

Counterterrorist operations were launched against a group of rebels in Daghestan's Khasavyurt and Kazbek districts earlier on May 13.

Daghestan's Interior Department said that a group of rebels led by Umalakh Magomedov was located by Daghestan's police and federal military units in the forest near the village of Endirey. Fighting was under way in the district for several hours.

One OMON special-forces soldier was reportedly killed.

Daghestan authorities are sending additional military units to the scene.
