The Tajik and Iranian nationals who were sentenced to prison terms in the United Arab Emirates for murdering Hero of Russia Sulim Yamadayev, a native of Chechnya, have been released from prison and deported home. This comes in a statement for the RIA Novosti news agency by the Tajik Vice-Consul in Dubai, Saidmuhammed Salihov.

The crime, perpetrated in the UAE in late March 2009, sent ripples due to the Yamadayev family differences with the Chechen President.

A Dubai court sentenced the Tajik national Maksudzhon Ismatov and Iranian national Mahdi Lornia to life in prison for murdering Yamadayev.

But later the court of appeals examined a plea for clemency for the convicted by Yamadayev’s brother, Issa, and reduced their term to ...

To: Mr. President of Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of

European Mevlüt ÇAVUŞOĞLU

Dear President,

For many years I have been addressing to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe my plea to conduct an impartial investigation of what has been committed in Chechnya from the international law position. I addressed this plea also to the United Nations, European Union and other highest international institutions, with support of tens of thousands of people from all over the world.

Numerous demonstrations, peace marches, hunger strikes and other events were undertaken to draw these bodies’ attention to Chechnya situation, but all pleas for launching an impartial international investigation in Chechnya had been either ignored or responded evasively.

I would like to remind you that Russian Federation, or Russia, joined Council of Europe on February 28, 1996, in the midst of the ...

Window on Eurasia: Chechen Internet ‘Developing Not Badly,’ Insider Says

Paul Goble

Staunton, April 17 – Given the role of the Internet and social media in the spread of popular revolts in many countries, there has been a great deal of speculation about how these new media are developing in places like Chechnya, but most of the commentary on such issues has come from outsiders rather than direct participants.

The current issue of the Daghestani online newspaper, "Nastoyashcheye vremya,” provides a welcome exception with its publication of information supplied anonymously by a Chechen blogger about how the Internet with its blogs and social media is developing in his republic (gazeta-nv.ru/content/view/5875/109/).

The paper’s Bagdat Tumalayev who writes frequently about new media in the Caucasus but relatively seldom about developments in that sector in Chechnya reports that "a Chechen blogger who wishes to remain anonymous has decided to talk about the state of ...

The Ministry of Agriculture of Chechnya: the speed of mine clearing the area must be accelerated manifold

Apr 15 2011, 18:00

Officials of the Ministry of Agriculture consider that that the process of mine clearing of the territory of Chechnya must be accelerated manifold. With the present-day speed of performing these works clearing agricultural and forest lands of Chechnya will take no less than one hundred years.

"Mine clearing of the territory of the republic is being done within the framework of federal target program", a representative of the republican Ministry of Agriculture said to the correspondent of "Caucasian Knot".

According to him, a number of initiatives to offer the federal center and the Ministry of Regional Development of Russia on improving the present situation are currently being worked out. In our interlocutor's opinion, clearing the territory of the republic from mines, unexploded ammunition and other highly explosive objects "must be quickened manifold".

No signs indicating that warlord Umarov alive - Chechen head Kadyrov (Part 2)

GROZNY. April 16 (Interfax) - There are no serious signs indicating that prominent North Caucasus warlord Doku Umarov is alive, head of Chechnya Ramzan Kadyrov said.

"Since the moment an airstrike was carried out upon this area [the Sunzha district of Ingushetia], there have been no serious signs indicating that Umarov is alive," Kadyrov told journalists.

"The allegations that he called somewhere should not be taken seriously, because the voice could have been faked," he said.

It was reported earlier that Umarov called Radio Liberty during a live program after it had been reported that he might have been killed in the operation in Ingushetia.

"We know that Abdullayev [Supyan Abdullayev, who was killed in the operation in Ingushetia], the main ideologist of the militants in the North Caucasus, is always near Umarov. This is evident from intelligence we ...
