The father of Umar Israilov, the former bodyguard of the Chechen President, Ramzan Kadyrov, who was murdered in Vienna in January 2009 after accusing Kadyrov of torture and giving evidence against him to the European Court of Human Rights, is expected to testify today (October 3) in a Vienna court at the trial of three men accused of killing Israilov. According to the Kavkazsky Uzel (Caucasian Knot) website, it is expected that Sharpudi Israilov, who spent about a year in a secret prison in Chechnya after being incarcerated by Chechen authorities trying to force his son to return to the republic, will tell the court about those prisons in Chechnya and name the people who tortured him (www.kavkaz-uzel.ru, December 3).

The campaign started with bold headlines referring to the arrests of individuals from the Chechen branch of Islamists. In an interview with the BBC’s Russian Service, Lieve Pellens, a spokeswoman for the Belgian Federal Prosecutor’s office, clarified that there were two Russian citizens of Chechen origin among those who were arrested on November 23. The group of suspects now in police custody also includes six citizens from Belgium who are of Moroccan descent. Strasbourg Court obliges Russia to pay more than 240,000 euros to relatives of casualties in ChechnyaThe European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) made a decision on the murder of four young residents of Chechnya in 2000. According to the decision, Russia shall pay 60,000 euros to each family as compensation of moral harm and 2212 euros of legal costs. According to the claimants, on February 7, 2000, four residents of Chechnya were shot dead by Russian militaries in the course of a "cleansing" in the village of Gekhi-Chu without any reason. A criminal case on this fact was initiated only in July 2000; and soon the inquiry was suspended due to impossibility to identify those guilty, as the human rights association named AGORA reports. As a person involved in all political processes this cannot but upset me. I realize the hopelessness of the situation. What state is Chechnya in at the moment: war or peace? Have things settled down? It is impossible to explain the situation there in two words. There is no doubt that Chechnya has been occupied and conquered. The Chechen people are hostages of the Kremlin and its appointees and are violated by them. People die daily. There are daily kidnappings, tortures and extra-judicial executions. The mountains of Chechnya will see the creation of a new world-class ski resort. The Vaduchi slopes will be situated 3,000 metres above the sea. The resort will come into full operation in five years, ready to receive up to 12,000 visitors per hour, says the Republic’s head Ramzan Kadyrov.
