Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov.

The father of Umar Israilov, the former bodyguard of the Chechen President, Ramzan Kadyrov, who was murdered in Vienna in January 2009 after accusing Kadyrov of torture and giving evidence against him to the European Court of Human Rights, is expected to testify today (October 3) in a Vienna court at the trial of three men accused of killing Israilov. According to the Kavkazsky Uzel (Caucasian Knot) website, it is expected that Sharpudi Israilov, who spent about a year in a secret prison in Chechnya after being incarcerated by Chechen authorities trying to force his son to return to the republic, will tell the court about those prisons in Chechnya and name the people who tortured him (www.kavkaz-uzel.ru, December 3).

A suspect is led away during an anti-terror sweep on November 23, 2010 in Antwerp, Belgium (AP).

Mass arrests of alleged terrorists in three European countries –Belgium, Holland and Germany– were shown live on TV in Holland and Belgium in late November. The campaign started with bold headlines referring to the arrests of individuals from the Chechen branch of Islamists. In an interview with the BBC’s Russian Service, Lieve Pellens, a spokeswoman for the Belgian Federal Prosecutor’s office, clarified that there were two Russian citizens of Chechen origin among those who were arrested on November 23. The group of suspects now in police custody also includes six citizens from Belgium who are of Moroccan descent. These suspects were caught in Antwerp, Belgium; while three citizens of Moroccan origin were from the Netherlands, and ...

Strasbourg Court obliges Russia to pay more than 240,000 euros to relatives of casualties in Chechnya

Nov 26 2010, 22:10

The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) made a decision on the murder of four young residents of Chechnya in 2000.

According to the decision, Russia shall pay 60,000 euros to each family as compensation of moral harm and 2212 euros of legal costs.

According to the claimants, on February 7, 2000, four residents of Chechnya were shot dead by Russian militaries in the course of a "cleansing" in the village of Gekhi-Chu without any reason. A criminal case on this fact was initiated only in July 2000; and soon the inquiry was suspended due to impossibility to identify those guilty, as the human rights association named AGORA reports.

The ECtHR has concluded that Russia had broken the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) in the part of the right to life and the right to fair trial, ...

An interview of Akhmed Zakaev to the German magazine Kurier

November 08th, 2010

What do you feel when you hear the news from Chechnya?
In the past 10 years we have only heard negative news. As a person involved in all political processes this cannot but upset me. I realize the hopelessness of the situation.

What state is Chechnya in at the moment: war or peace? Have things settled down?

The Chechen people are hostages of the Kremlin and its appointees and are violated by them. People die daily. There are daily kidnappings, tortures and extra-judicial executions. Chechnya is a bleeding wound on Europe’s body. Europeans should and could interfere in order to put things right but they turn a blind eye.

Who plays the main part in the Chechen Resistance now? Do the liberal ...
