Fourteenth issue of the monthly Chechen Society Today released

PRAGUE, September 18 - The fourteenth issue of the monthly Chechenskoye obshchestvo segodnya (Chechen Society Today) has been released.

The issue opens with an account of a recent exhibit of more than 200 photographs by Russkii Reporter correspondent Yuliya Vishnevetskaya which was held from August 8 to 26 at the Andrei Sakharov Museum in Moscow. The photographs were accompanied by commentaries, and showed life on both sides of the Caucasus Ridge, highlighting the acute contrast between Georgia and Chechnya. The report also describes the Caucasus film festival, which ran concurrently with the exhibit, and the showing on August 17 of the film Crying Sun by Zarema Mutusheva. On August 25 there was a showing of Mariya Novikova's award-winning film Three Comrades [Tri Tovarishcha].

On September 19, security forces in Nazran, Ingushetia, clashed with demonstrators protesting the kidnapping of two brothers, reportedly by Federal Security Service (FSB) personnel.

The programme of events at Brigittenau’s “Haus der Begegnung “ (Meeting House) attracted the attention of dozens of people of different nationalities, ages and occupations, and gave them an opportunity to familiarize themselves with the situation of Chechen refugees in Austria, as well as with Chechen history, culture, traditions and cuisine.

Holy month of Ramadan begins in Chechnya

In Chechnya the Muslim holy month of Ramadan has begun. From Thursday, all Muslims must observe a 30-day fast, during which they will neither eat nor drink from sunrise to sunset. Communal prayers have been said in all the republic’s mosques in connection with this event. Believers asked Allah to send peace and tranquillity to the land of Chechnya. At this time also, members of their families distributed sweets and other delicacies to their neighbours, in honour of the holy month.

This month, the value of all charitable works, as the theological scholars call them, increases 70-fold, on condition that people cleanse themselves in soul and body of worldly pollution. In this month Allah may forgive a man much if he sincerely repents.
