CAUCASIAN KNOT: Environmental Disaster In Grozny

posted by FerrasB on September, 2006 as CHECHNYA

CAUCASIAN KNOT / NEWS

15/9/2005
Environmental disaster in Grozny

Chechnya's State Council yesterday held a meeting at which questions connected with the environmental situation in the Chechen capital were discussed. The situation was recognised critical, a source with the Chechen governmental staff told Caucasian Knot.

The situation is said to be especially critical in Grozny's Zavodskoi district where industrial facilities and oil refineries were located previously. Besides, there is a great number of so-called "condensate holes" and mini plants for oil products there. The air there is contaminated with hydrogen sulphide fumes which are released when oil is refined without the proper equipment, according to the source.

"Immediately in Grozny, there is a major source of radiation which must be urgently eliminated. However, we don't have either funds, or other functionality to solve that problem. Treatment facilities and special grounds for waste disposal must be built, which all requires huge financial expenditures," he said.

Finland grants asylum and residence permits to dozens of Chechens

Finland has started granting asylum and residence permits to
Chechens on the grounds of the threat of violations of human rights
in their home country.

The number of Russian asylum seekers grew several times over in
Finland around the turn of the millennium. This can be partly
explained by the Russian-Chechen war that started in 1999.
Following the outbreak of the war in Chechnya, Finland's
Directorate of Immigration (UVI) has granted asylum to 21 Chechens
since 2004, and residence permits to 67 Chechens since 2001, on the
basis of the need for international protection.
Even though the ethnic background of these refugees is not
indicated by the statistics, Director of Regional Unit Esko Repo
from the Directorate of Immigration reports that almost certainly,
nearly all of them are of Chechen origin.
Prior to this, Finland never ...

Alu Alkhanov Doesn't Want to Be Chechen President
// He'd rather change the republic's name
President of the Chechen Republic Alu Alkhanov wants to rename the republic and take the word “Chechen” out of use because, he says, “it is used negatively and has no legal base.” Alkhanov suggests calling it the Nokhchiin Republic at the Russian-Arab Business Council meeting in St. Petersburg. “Chechens and other people living in the republic never use that ugly word,” Alkhanov said. “Based on the name of the people, we are Nokhchi. The republic should have another name.”
Alkhanov's press secretary Said-Magomed Isaraev commented that “We are only talking about the possibility of making such a decision. We are not sure, of course, that our initiative will be supported… A year ago, the president gathered scholars and suggested that they think of ...
