Heart diseases smite Chechnya

A great number of adult residents of Chechnya have heart diseases. Doctors also mention that this rate is on the rise among children.

"Seventy-two thousand people in the republic have various heart diseases. This is a huge figure, especially considering that not all sick people are registered," a republican Health Ministry official told Caucasian Knot. "Such diseases are very expensive to treat, so few can count to be cured."

"Children with heart diseases number 1,300 in Chechnya currently. The situation here is also critical, but now the parents of such children can be hopeful. A British humanitarian organisation has started work in Moscow, and it is ready to provide assistance in treating sick children. People from our republic now can apply directly there," he says.

September in a history of Chechen people

On a photo - the emblem of North Caucasian Emirat(September 1919 - March 1920).

The emblem of North Caucasian Emirat (the head of the state - sheikh Uzun-Hadzhi) represented the rifle and a sabre arranged by a pyramid, above them - a chalm of khadzhi with a crown. Atop of all - the balance symbolizing validity. On bowls of weights: on the one hand - green banner of Gazavat looks as a half moon, and on the other hand - the opened Koran. In the bottom part of the arms settled down the half moon and three stars meaning that structure NCE included mountain areas of Dagestan, the Chechen Republic and Ingushetia.

In 1919 the state Uzun-Hadzhi has undertaken release of paper money (banknotes) by advantage 5, 25, 50, 100, 250, 500 roubles. Inscriptions on checks were carried out in Russian, in Arabian and ...

SAVING CHECHNYA´S PAST
26.09.2005 - 00:15:09

A collection of Chechen art and culture salvaged from years of war and theft needs a proper home...

In the centre of Grozny stands a war-damaged five-storey building, with its windows replaced by polythene sheeting where the glass has been blown out.

The view may be uninviting, but walk through the metal door standing ajar on the ground floor and you will find yourself in Chechnya´s main museum.

The National Museum is one of just three to survive the ravages of war.

It is itself a product of conflict - set up in 1996 at the end of the first Chechen war to amalgamate what was left of the archaeological finds and cultural artefacts from the Chechen State Museum and the Zakharov museum´s collection of Russian and European paintings and sculptures.

Before the war, the State Museum had over 250,000 items in its possession, but the building and much of the ...

Chechnya has been ravaged by war for a decade (Keystone)

A Swiss-sponsored group dedicated to finding a peaceful solution for the war-torn Russian republic of Chechnya has held its inaugural meeting in Bern.

The Chechen Civil Society Forum includes about 100 human rights, scientific, economic, cultural and political groups.

The forum was initiated by the Swiss branch of the Society for Threatened Peoples and is supported by several Swiss members of parliament.

Swiss parliamentarian and the society's president in Switzerland, Ruth-Gaby Vermot-Mangold, said the forum would try to bring together disparate factions of the Chechen community to promote peace.

It would seek to end Chechnya's "isolation" in the world by forging closer links with the international community.

"You are the living proof that in an environment of conflict the flower of peace can flourish," she told ...
