Moscow Grows Weary Over Kadyrov’s Excessive Independence

Publication: Eurasia Daily Monitor

Chechen Republic head Ramzan Kadyrov

On July 30, the primary news outlet of the Chechen militants, Kavkaz Center, citing its own sources, reported Moscow was preparing a drastic shift in its policies in the North Caucasus. According to the website, the main points of Moscow’s new plan for the North Caucasus includes the removal of Ramzan Kadyrov from power in Chechnya, sending him into a "dignified exile” to Moscow as a deputy Russian interior minister and the physical elimination of Chechen rebel leader Doku Umarov, the "emir” of the Caucasus Emirate. In such an event these moves could result in reconciliation in Chechnya, given that Kadyrov’s successor, possibly Beslan Gantamirov, would have an explicit permission from Moscow to form "a government of national unity” in Chechnya that would bring the moderate members of the insurgency into the ...

BBC NEWS: Stolen Brides And Life In Exile

Stolen brides and life in exile

By Lucy Ash
BBC News, Kazakhstan

Over the years, large numbers of Chechens have fled Chechnya and are making lives elsewhere. Many have chosen to leave, but others have been given no choice.

As Zulikhan stepped on board, one of the guests thrust a bouquet of flowers into her arms. "For our new bride," he winked.

It was Zulikhan's first outing as a married woman. A month ago, on her way home from college in the Chechen capital Grozny, she was snatched off the street and bundled into a car by a man she barely knew.

A week later, she was Bogdan Khazhiev's wife.

Straight after the wedding he took her to Pavlodar in northern Kazakhstan and installed her in a couple of sparsely furnished rooms above his parents' flat.

And now here she was, nearly 3,100 miles (5,000km) from home, sailing down a river in Kazakhstan.

But it was an idyllic summer's ...

Exiled Chechen Nationalist Calls New Militant Leader Moderate

Akhmed Zakaev at a press conference in London in August 2009

August 03, 2010
Akhmed Zakaev, once one of the top officials in the Chechen separatist government but currently living in British exile, has said that the man picked to take over the separatist movement is a moderate.

Zakaev said he knows Aslambek Vadalov personally and has already been in touch with him.

Zakaev described Vadalov as a moderate with no links to Islamic groups.

Vadalov was identified as the successor in a video statement by Doku Umarov in which he said he would step down as leader of the Chechen separatists for "health reasons."

Zakaev predicted that Umarov would "either be killed or taken out of the country."

Zakaev was granted U.K. asylum in 2003 but said he is considering returning to Russia to work for Chechen independence through peaceful means.

CK: In Spring-Summer, Russia Saw Over Dozen Mass Fights Where Chechens Took Part

In spring-summer, Russia saw over dozen mass fights where Chechens took part

Jul 29 2010, 22:20

In spring and summer this year, natives from Chechnya have taken part in at least a dozen mass fights, which burst out in different regions of the Russian Federation; several more were prevented. Experts indicate a high level of xenophobia in the country and a low level of tolerance, including among Chechens themselves.

Mass fights ended in casualties and victims. Those incidents reported by the "Caucasian Knot" in the last five months took away at least six human lives; 35 persons and more were wounded.

Most often representatives of law enforcement bodies attribute such incidents to everyday reasons. Thus, Evgeniy Gildeev, official spokesman of the GUVD (Chief Interior Department) for the Moscow Region, said in his comments on the fights of Muscovites with Caucasians that most often they burst out on some everyday grounds among young people.

Andrei Bachman, a political scientist ...
