Kadyrov's presence at Sulim Yamadaev's commemoration means complete reconciliation of conflicting parties, observers believe

Aug 26 2010, 23:20

On August 25, President of Chechnya Ramzan Kadyrov, together with Deputy of the Russian State Duma Adam Delimkhanov, visited the commemoration ceremony in the Yamadaevs house in Gudermes. As local observers believe, Kadyrov's and Delimkhanov's presence at the mourning ceremony in the house of the Yamadaev clan indicates the final reconciliation of the parties in conflict.

Kadyrov and Delimkhanov have condoled with the Yamadaevs. In his interview to journalists in Gudermes after participation in the commemoration ceremony ("tezet" in the Chechen language), Ramzan Kadyrov said that he had gone to reconciliation with the Yamadaevs exclusively under the request of "respectful people." "I visited the mourning ceremony and expressed my condolences; I also visited Sulim's mother, who was very touched. She said that my visit was a great joy for her, which she compared with the return of her ...

Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov may change the name of his official title in September in case the Chechen parliament approves this initiative, the speaker of the Chechen parliament said on Saturday.

"After the discussion we have come to conclusion that the appropriate name will be the shirt one - 'regional head'," Dukuvaha Abdurakhmanov said.

Earlier Kadyrov sent a letter to the Chechen republic's parliament with a proposal to change his official title and called on to "end the parade of regional presidents".

Kadyrov said there should only be one president in Russia and regional heads should have different titles. The vast majority of regional leaders are known as governors, but most of Russia's 21 republics have presidents.

Jamestown Foundation: Moscow Grows Weary Over Kadyrov’s Excessive Independence

Moscow Grows Weary Over Kadyrov’s Excessive Independence

Publication: North Caucasus Analysis
August 13, 2010 06:32 PM

On July 30, the primary news outlet of the Chechen militants, Kavkaz Center, citing its own sources, reported Moscow was preparing a drastic shift in its policies in the North Caucasus. According to the website, the main points of Moscow’s new plan for the North Caucasus includes the removal of Ramzan Kadyrov from power in Chechnya, sending him into a "dignified exile” to Moscow as a deputy Russian interior minister and the physical elimination of Chechen rebel leader Doku Umarov, the "emir” of the Caucasus Emirate. In such an event these moves could result in reconciliation in Chechnya, given that Kadyrov’s successor, possibly Beslan Gantamirov, would have an explicit permission from Moscow to form "a government of national unity” in Chechnya that would bring the moderate members of the insurgency into the ruling bodies of the ...

"Thank you for giving me the possibility to share my story"

"The boy took a piece of bread out of his pocket, a small piece of brown bread, held it out to the soldier and said: "Please, don’t shoot me and I’ll give you the bread…”

Forcing someone to witness the torture and/or killing of another person can be torture in itself. Indeed, the practice is as widely used as it is gruesome.

A refugee from Chechnya, now living in Georgia, recounts his harrowing story in the book My name is…, published by the Georgian Center for Psychosocial and Medical Rehabilitation of torture Victims (GRCT), a member of the IRCT.

"I was born in Kazakhstan. My parents had been deported from their native Chechnya. I remember returning to Chechnya only vaguely. I see, as if in a dream, my two sisters, my father and our low-ceilinged house with its slanting roof. I also see two rooms ...

CHECHEN PRESS: Statement By The ChRI Cabinet Of Ministers

Statement by the ChRI Cabinet of Ministers

August 9th, 2010

For the last 16 years there has been a continuous  record of violence and atrocities committed on the territory of the occupied Chechen state. The world has chosen to play the part of a dispassionate observer and has abandoned our nation to be torn apart by the Russian Empire. Political expediency and economic considerations have prevailed over the pangs of conscience of eminent world politicians and leaders of international institutions. Instead of objective intervention which they are committed to and which they are engaged in in other parts of the world, they limit themselves to discussions of the Chechen issue. It is not our job at the moment to lecture anyone,  but we consider it our right, as victims of state terrorism, to be heard and to demand justice.

We have stated time and time again that our only wish is to have ...
