the republic.

Kadyrov's world of crime (weekly review)By Vadim Borshchev, special to Prague Watchdog
Ramzan Kadyrov has long been one of the most popular characters on the Russian-speaking Internet, where he has become established less as a real figure than as an exotic form of speech. The absurdities, stupidities and monstrosities with which he constantly regales his grateful fans consistently draw avid attention. LiveJournal users reproduce the leader of the Chechen Republic’s statements, adding detailed and malicious commentaries of their own. They laugh at his incoherent speech, they worry when he utters his not invariably clear but always threatening words, they curse, swear and giggle. It’s a rare bird that gives Kadyrov a tender glance, but that does occasionally happen,it cannot be denied. Yet despite all the horror stories that are circulated about him, Kadyrov has not grown into a genuine monster. The denizens of the ... | >> full

August 11, 2009The Price Of Progress -- Life In Kadyrov's Grozny Permeated By Fearby Gregory Feifer
GROZNY -- The last time I visited the Chechen capital, in 2007, it seemed most of the city had been already rebuilt.
It was just before national parliamentary elections, in which Chechnya -- only recently bombed to ruins during two bitter wars for independence from Moscow -- would deliver 99 percent of its votes to the main pro-Kremlin party, United Russia.
The party's only platform was support for the man who'd launched the second of those wars, then-President Vladimir Putin.
But I was wrong to think the city's reconstruction was nearly finished. A year and a half on, Grozny has been still further transformed. It now boasts Europe's largest mosque, surrounded by acres of neatly tended gardens.
Expensive cars speed down the main thoroughfare, Putin Prospekt, which is lined with cafes bearing French and Italian names, a sushi restaurant, and ... >> full

| Charity head found dead in Chechnya | | Human rights activist Nataliya Estemirova was murdered last month [Reuters] The head of a Russian charity kidnapped along with her husband in the restive region of Chechnya has been found dead, according to Interfax news agency.
The bodies of Zarema Sadulayeva and Alik Dzhabrailov, her partner, were found in Grozny, the Chechen capital, on Tuesday. "Their bodies were found in the settlement of Chernorechye in Grozny," Interfax quoted Alexander Cherkasov, a board member of Memorial, a human rights group, as saying.
Cherkasov did not have immediate information on the cause of death. He said Sadulayeva's husband had previously been jailed for four years for links to banned armed groups and had married the charity head two months after leaving prison.
Interfax also quoted interior ministry sources in the region as confirming the killing. "The rights activists were found in the boot of a car with gunshot wounds," it quoted an official source as saying.
