The
pro-Moscow dictator of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov, has suggested that
Russia would recognise Chechen independence according to the model of
Georgia’s breakaway republics of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, said
Zhaloudi Saralyapov, chairman of the parliament of the Chechen Republic
of Ichkeria (ChRI).
Russia fought a brief war with Georgia in August 2008 for control of
Abkhazia and South Ossetia, previously autonomous regions of Georgia.
The war left both territories under effective Russian occupation, with
thousands of Russian troops deployed there.
Abkhazia and South Ossetia declared independence from Georgia in
1991. Russia recognised both states after the war with Georgia, but the
final status of the two republics remains undecided. Most residents of
both Abkhazia and South Ossetia have held Russian citizenship for
several years.
Zhaloudi Saralyapov said Kadyrov’s representatives had made the
suggestion regarding the “Abkhaz model” in talks with ... >> full

Don't bring the curtain down yet, gentlemen!By Dzhambulat Are, special to Prague Watchdog
Akhmed Zakayev’s agreement to take part in talks with the envoys of Ramzan Kadyrov (read the Kremlin) was received by some of his independence-backing supporters as an outright betrayal of their ideals. Journalists are writing about the fall of the last bastion of Ichkeria, and saying that Zakayev looks ridiculous when issuing orders to armies that exist solely in his imagination. On August 19, in an interview with Radio Svoboda’s North Caucasus service, Zakayev outlined the questions he had raised during the part of the talks with Dukvaha Abdurakhmanov that was held behind closed doors. Zakayev spoke of the need to search for the perpetrators of the killings of human rights workers, to return to their families the bodies of dead presidents and resistance fighters, to secure the release of the thousands of ... | >> full

The London AgreementBy Lyoma Gudayev, special to Prague Watchdog Grozny Note: we think it right to point out that this article by the former press secretary of the head of the Chechen Republic, Ramzan Kadyrov, does not express the editors' point of view. However, we believe it is important to hear the views of all the parties concerned. We earnestly ask our readers to refrain from offensive comments and ad hominem attacks. The editors For Chechnya the main political event of last week was undoubtedly the meeting in London between the Speaker of the Chechen Parliament and an emissary from the self-proclaimed Republic of Ichkeria, a meeting which led to an agreement on the holding of a World Chechen Congress in order to work out a unified political platform. However, in Chechnya the things that are happening just now are not seen merely as an abstract game of political ... | >> full

Chechen Leader Denies Blame For Killings, Accuses West Of Violence
Prominent Russian human rights activist Natalya Estemirova
was abducted outside her home in the Chechen capital, Grozny, last
month. Hours later, her body was discovered in a forest in the
neighboring region of Ingushetia. Estemirova, who'd investigated
abductions, torture and other rights abuses in Chechnya, had been shot
in the head.
Estemirova's colleagues
blame Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov. They accuse him of fostering an
atmosphere of impunity in which the abductions and killings of his
critics take place. But in an exclusive interview with RFE/RL, Kadyrov
denies the accusations. He says his only concern is the welfare of
Chechnya's residents, and blames the West for spreading lies about him.
The
interview, excerpted below, was conducted at 2 a.m. August 8 at
Kadyrov's sprawling residential complex outside ... >> full
