By Asya Umarova in Novye Aldy, Grozny Malika Labazanova tells her story quietly, sitting under a canopy in the courtyard of her house, peeling potatoes and not raising her eyes. The asphalt in the yard is still broken up, a small reminder of what her house and family went through in February 2000. The house itself was burned down and has been rebuilt. Now Malika, 52, has received a measure of redress from the European Court of Human Rights for all the agony she went through and for the loved ones she lost, but what happened will stay with her forever. "I will never forget that state of mind - waiting for death," she said. On February 5, 2000, Russian soldiers carried out a "mopping-up operation" - the term used for a sweep for rebel fighters - in Novye Aldy, ... >> full

GROZNY -- A folk ensemble of 18 Chechens who applied for asylum Sunday while on a tour of Finland were tricked into abandoning their homeland and want to return, Chechnya's culture minister said Thursday.
Two male and three female performers in the Zhowkhar folk ensemble -- which had semi-official status -- applied for asylum, along with the group's manager and 11 family members, citing a dangerous security situation at home.
Culture Minister Dikalu Muzakayev said the dancers seeking asylum had actually been sacked from the group a month ago, although a Finnish businessman who invited them to Finland disputes that.
"They enjoyed good working conditions here. They are crying and want to come back," said Muzakayev, without giving more details on whether the group would take them back.
