CHECHNYA: THE HIDDEN WAR

Inhabitants of mountain villages are unable to go home because of continuing
violence between federal forces and rebels.

By Asya Umarova in Yarysh-Mardy

In the village of Yarysh-Mardy in the hills south of the Chechen capital Grozny
there is no sign of life.

Yarysh-Mardy used to have a population of 620, a school, a library, a cultural
centre, a post office and a mosque. Now there is nothing.

All the houses were completely destroyed back in 1999, at the beginning of the
second Chechen campaign. Since then, the village has become overgrown with
vegetation and has become a closed zone. There are dangers everywhere - mainly
so-called "butterfly mines", dropped from aeroplanes, and unexploded ordnance.

Even the few wild animals you see are wounded or maimed: wild boars and pigs
that are missing a leg, birds with no wings or hares without ears.

This is a picture of devastation repeated across the ...

RUSSIA'S UNCERTAIN MILITARY FUTURE IN CHECHNYA

KADYROV’S PRESIDENTIAL AMBITIONS MAY BE THWARTED…

Many observers have been predicting that Ramzan Kadyrov will assume the Chechen Republic’s presidency soon, after he reaches the constitutionally-mandated minimum age of 30 on October 5. On August 10, for example, Kommersant quoted Frants Klintsevich, deputy chairman of the pro-Kremlin United Russia party’s faction in the State Duma, as saying he had no doubts that Kadyrov, who is currently Chechnya’s prime minister, would become Chechnya’s president this fall. Other observers, however, have begun to express doubts about whether Kadyrov will become Chechnya’s president, at least in the near term.

Kadyrov himself put a question mark over his political ...

PRO-MOSCOW CHECHEN LEADER CREATES NEW HUMAN RIGHTS BODY

PRO-MOSCOW CHECHEN LEADER CREATES NEW HUMAN RIGHTS BODY. On October
5, Chechen Prime Minister Ramzan Kadyrov will turn 30, the minimum
age for candidates for the post of pro-Moscow republic head. Many
observers both in Russia and abroad have long considered it a given
that Kadyrov will be named to succeed incumbent republic head Alu
Alkhanov before the end of this year, even though Kadyrov has denied
harboring any such ambitions. And a recent visit to Chechnya by a
large Russian government delegation whose members were cited in the
Russian press as unanimously lauding Kadyrov's role in expediting
reconstruction of the republic's war-shattered infrastructure has
also been widely interpreted as reflecting Moscow's backing for
Kadyrov (see "RFE/RL Newsline," July 27, 2006).
Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya, however, who has years
of first-hand experience of developments in Chechnya and elsewhere in
the North Caucasus, suggested in a recent interview with RFE/RL's
North Caucasus Service and a subsequent article published ...

Secret Russian Military Uranium Enrichment Plant Operating in Chechnya
Publication time: Today at 10:09 Djokhar time
In connection with some suspicious Russian-American activity for removing highly radioacrive materials,  independent analysts remind of the fact that a secret Russian uranium enrichment military facility was operating in the Chechen capital of Jokhar (former Groznyi) at least at the time of the USSR.

A reference to this facility is contained in the book by Avraham Shifrin called The First Guidebook to Prisons and Concentration Camps in the Soviet Union, Stуphanus Edition, Uldingen/Seewis (Switzerland), 1980. On page 34 in a list of  41 Russian death camps, camp No 10 is described as "Groznyi, Chechen-Ingush A.S.S.R. - underground uranium mining, uranium enricment facility".

The books says that the Groznyi camp belongs to the first group of Russian death camps, that is "camps that almost no one ever comes out of alive ...
