Chechen policeman charged with supplying arms to guerillas

GROZNY. Aug 6 (Interfax) - A criminal case has been opened against a Chechen policeman suspected of aiding and abetting guerillas by transporting weapons.

A Grozny district prosecutor's office is investigating a criminal case against a policeman from the Zavodskoi district police who is suspected of transporting firearms for illegal armed units for three months in 2005, a Chechen law enforcement source told Interfax on Saturday. The man has been placed into custody.

The Council of Muftis of the Chechen Republic on August 4 officially declared a jihad against "Wahhabism." Interfax quoted Chechen Mufti Sultan Mirzaev as telling journalists that the decision had been announced during a meeting between representatives of the clergy and law-enforcement agencies in the village of Tsentoroi, which is the home village of the Kadyrov clan. Mirzaev said it was the largest such meeting since the death of Akhmad Kadyrov in May 2004. "Wahhabism is the plague of the 20th and the 21st centuries," he said. Chechnya: Basaev Interview Enrages Russian Authorities
The interview with Chechen warlord Shamil Basaev that aired on American television on July 29 dealt a serious blow to the Kremlin. Russian authorities made desperate efforts to prevent the ABC television network from broadcasting the interview on its "Nightline" news program. The Russian Embassy in Washington sent its protest to ABC several hours before the show aired (Kommersant, July 30). When the interview was broadcast, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that it would not renew ABC's accreditation in Russia for the next year (RIA-Novosti, August 2).

There are several reasons why Russian authorities are so angry at the interview with Basaev.
