UN to sponsor Chechen agriculture

Caharkala / Agency Caucasus - The United Nations (UN) will subsidize agricultural investments in years after the war has rendered such investments almost impossible to flourish.

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the UN has reached agreement with the pro-Russian Chechen administration to support financially agricultural investments in Chechnya. Head of The Foreign Affairs Department Ramzan Lechkhadzhiyev of the Chechen Administration, FAO Emergency Coordinator for the North Caucasus Winston Rudder and FAO Officer Farukh Tairov met on Monday, according to the secretary of the Chechen President.

FAO will supply assistance with increasing both the agricultural production of foodstuff and the living standards of residents of rural people.

Rudder called the Chechen Republic on to develop agricultural policies rapidly if FAO is expected to successfully implement local projects.

FAO has been actively involved in Chechnya since 2003 in fields of forestry, ...

Chechen youth less interested in study abroad

Caharkala / Agency Caucasus - Subjection to mistreatment, discrimination and attacks is no longer a drive behind the Chechen youth for enrolment at foreign universities. There is an explosion this year in applications to Chechen universities.

Vaha Magomayev, a head official from the Chechen State University, said that there are a large number of student applications this year to the university: “There was not over the recent years such a large number of applications.” Magomayev pointed to plans to allow a total of 2 300 new students to be enrolled in 2007. “Schools of law, economics and medicine are the most popular ones. There seems to be a slight interest among students in agriculture and technique, two areas of significance to the country.”

A statement from Bekhan Hazbulatov, Director of the Chechen State Pedagogy Institute, points out ...

May 15, 2007 (RFE -- High in the mountains of Chechnya, the ancient village of Zumsoi stands as a tragic symbol of the recent wars pitting the independence-seeking republic against Russia. Once home to several families whose ancestors had farmed the rocky terrain for generations, it is now abandoned.

Zarema Mukusheva is a young Chechen human rights activist from Grozny who spent two years documenting life in Zumsoi. The resulting film -- “Crying Sun: The Impact Of War In The Mountains Of Chechnya” -- was recently screened in Washington, D.C. RFE/RL correspondent Heather Maher spoke to Mukusheva ahead of the event.

RFE/RL: How did you decide the title of the film?

Zarema Mukusheva: We chose this title because we remembered a picture that was ...

money but want to see justice [AFP]
Russia has been ordered by the European Court of Human Rights to pay $225,000 in damages after finding it responsible for the deaths of around 11 people killed in Chechnya in 2000.

The failure to prosecute those responsible for the deaths can only mean the authorities assented to the killings the Strasbourg-based court ruled.

The court was delivering its verdict on an alleged massacre near Grozny on February 5 2000 after Russian forces had retaken the city from separatist rebels, court documents said.

Russian troops shot unarmed residents in the streets and in their houses, demanded money from the locals and set fire to their  homes, the five testimonies presented to the court said.
