I'm not crazy about the title....

Russians claim killing of rebel Basayev, the Beslan butcher
By Andrew Osborn in Moscow
Published: 11 July 2006
After 11 years on the run, numerous reports of his demise, multiple attempts on his life, and a $10m bounty on his head, Chechnya's most feared and blood-soaked rebel commander, Shamil Basayev, has finally been killed.

According to Russia's FSB security service, Basayev, 41, was killed in a special forces operation in southern Russia in the early hours of Monday as he organised a terrorist attack to coincide with this weekend's G8 summit in St Petersburg. The FSB said that he was killed when a consignment of explosives was deliberately detonated yards from where he was sitting in a parked car in a rural part of Ingushetia, a Russian republic bordering Chechnya.

The rebels allege that Basayev and three other fighters were killed by ...

Dear brothers,

I'm a militant for independance of Quebec (my country) and I was shocked when I learned the death of commander Shamil Basayev. I want to express my compassion with all those who fight for Chechnya freedom. Russian invaders won't never win the war because your struggle is more strong and the ideal of freedom is more noble than the oppression!

BASAYEV'S DEATH CREATES FATEFUL CHOICE FOR RUSSIAN LEADERSHIP.

BASAYEV'S DEATH CREATES FATEFUL CHOICE FOR RUSSIAN LEADERSHIP.
The death late on July 9 of Chechen field commander Shamil Basayev
creates a window of opportunity for those few Russian officials who
advocate peace talks as the only logical way to end the ongoing
fighting across the North Caucasus. At the same time, if the Russian
leadership chooses to spurn that opportunity, the North Caucasus
resistance is already planning -- apparently in line with an eight
year plan of action drafted and endorsed four years ago -- to take
the fighting across the Volga and into the heartland of Russia.
The circumstances of Basayev's death remain sketchy: he
is said to have been killed when a lorry packed with explosives
detonated near the village of Ekazhevo, south-east of the Ingushetian
town of Nazran. Whether the explosion was freakishly fortuitous -- as
the deaths of Chechen President Aslan Maskhadov in March 2005 and of
Maskhadov's successor Abdul-Khalim Sadulayev ...

Baku Sun: Shamil Basayev’s Death Still Shrouded In Mystery

Shamil Basayev’s death still shrouded in mystery

GROZNY, Russia (AP) — The spectacular killing of Russia’s most wanted man, Chechen warlord Shamil Basayev, ends a years-long hunt for the fugitive who hid out in the mountainous territory in and around war-torn Chechnya.

But questions lingered Tuesday about the operation that Russian officials say led to Basayev’s death when a dynamite-filled truck exploded close to his car in a village in neighboring Ingushetia; by some accounts the blast was accidental.

Russia’s defense minister hailed the death of “our bin Laden” as a “landmark event.” Still, Sergei Ivanov warned that the 12-year struggle with Chechen separatist rebels — which has spread across the impoverished and mainly Muslim North Caucasus in Russia’s south — was not over yet.

“The killing of that terrorist doesn’t mean that the fight against militants is over,” Ivanov said, speaking on a trip to ...

Diplomatic representatives abroad of the Chechen Republic Ichkeria (ChRI) have drafted a manifesto addressed to participants of the G8 summit in St. Petersburg. Meeting in Berlin on July 5, the representatives reaffirmed the readiness of the Chechen resistance to embark on immediate and unconditional peace talks to end the ongoing war and stabilize the situation across the North Caucasus.

PRAGUE, July 14, 2006 (RFE/RL) -- The manifesto, signed by ChRI Foreign Minister Akhmed Zakayev, was posted on July 13 on the resistance website chechenpress.org.

Zakayev told RFE/RL's North Caucasus Service on July 14 that even though he was the one ...
