Shamil Basayev did not look like a man responsible for horrific atrocities. He was soft-spoken, and with his domed forehead, bushy beard and long Russian phrases, could have been mistaken for a Moscow intellectual. But if he was not frightening close up, few men have managed to terrify so many people across so wide an area.

Basayev played on his reputation and treated the long vain attempts of the Kremlin to catch him as a kind of game. Shamila Basayev's death (Shaheed insha Allah) has spawned a stir all over the world. Naturally the Muslims mourn, kafirs celebrate.

OSCE Chairman-in-Office, Belgian Foreign Minister Karel de Gucht was one of the first who has expressed his satisfaction on news about Shamil Basayev's death.

"Basayev's death in its own right is a good work, - said in Karel de Gucht's special statement, who has considered it important to state his pleasure publicly.

He also exressed a hope that in "the near future the situation will stabilized in Northern Caucasus and, in particular, in Chechnya".

After the OSCE Chairman-in-Office, the official representative of the Council of Europe who as well did not hide his public pleasure come up with his statement, having said that СЕ is satisfied by the news on Basayev's death.

Oppositional Ingush sources, in particular the site ingushetiya.ru, referring to the investigation by a journalist who talked with inhabitants of Ekazhevo village and eye-witnesses, report some details of the explosion of the Kamaz truck which was transporting explosives.

The journalist was told that the explosion occurred when the convoy was passing through, driving with very high speed. The truck loaded with TNT struck a pot-hole in the road, which caused the detonation of the explosives.

After the explosion, a passenger car with several Mujahideen drove up to the site of the accident. They shouted in Ingush language: "Where is Shamil?"

When they couldn't find Basayev's body, the Mujahideen left.

the North Caucasus could be in sight.

Russia's most wanted man, Chechen militant leader Shamil Basayev may have met
his end by accident rather than in a deliberate hit as Russian leaders claim,
but his death certainly marks a major victory for Moscow and could result in the
armed conflict beginning to ebb away.

Ground zero for this major development is the edge of Ali-Yurt, a small village
in Ingushetia not far from the border with Chechnya. A row of unfinished houses
still lacking doors and windows stands here, facing a road that is little more
