Shamil Basayev: Blamed for atrocities in Russia
The most wanted Chechen rebel warlord, Shamil Basayev, has been killed, Russian media report.

Basayev was killed in a special operation overnight in Ingushetia, near Chechnya, Russia's FSB security service chief Nikolai Patrushev said.

President Vladimir Putin said Basayev's killing was "deserved retribution" for terror attacks, including the 2004 mass hostage-taking at a school in Beslan.

Basayev, a key Chechen rebel commander, led many major attacks against Russia.

The September 2004 attack on a school in Beslan, in the North Caucasus, led to at least 331 deaths. It triggered outrage in Russia and other countries, as many women and children were among the victims.

The reported death of Basayev has not yet been confirmed by Chechen rebel sources.

Occupation command reports of death of Chechen Republic Ichkeria's vice-president Shamil Basayev. There no details have been reported.

Referring to FSB, the Russian mass-media reported that Basayev dead during a certain special operation in Ingushetia.

Earlier there was information about an explosion of a cargo vehicle KAMAZ in village of Ekazhevo, as a result of which 4 Mujahideen were dead.

The representative of Ingush puppet militia has claimed that from 4 dead Mujahideen 3 have been unidentified and one of them is probably Shamil Basayev and also inhabitants of Ingushetia Isa Kushtov and Tarhan Ganijev. The reason of explosion was a careless use of an explosive.

The representative of Military Council of State Defense Council Majlisul Shura of CRI Abu Umar has reported to Kavkaz Center news agency that the vice-president of CRI, the Military Amir of Mujahideen of Caucasus, Abdallah Shamil Abu-Idris became a Shaheed (insha Allah).

The Chechen commander die as a result of a accidental spontaneous explosion of a cargo vehicle with explosives on July 10, 2006, in Ekazhevo village, Ingushetia. Three other Mujahideen became Shaheeds (insha Allah) together with him.

The representative of Military Coucil has not reported any other details. At the same time he denied all claims of Russian side about a "special operation" against Shamil Basayev as a result of which ostensibly, the Chechen commander die.

INGUSHETIA - On the night of June 10 four guerrillas were killed in Ingushetia as a result of a truck explosion and one of the men killed was Shamil Basayev, official Russian sources announced today.

"According to available information, a group of terrorists were blown up by their own explosives and ammunition which they were carrying on a ‘Kamaz’ truck. The explosion occurred near the village of Ekazhevo, Nazransky district. It was of such force that only the frame of the truck remained, and unexploded ammunition and mines were scattered in a radius of approximately 150 metres", said a source in the law enforcement agencies.

MOSCOW - Shamil Basayev was the face and the brains of the Chechen rebels, but his death Monday is unlikely to be a fatal blow to the insurgency that has bloodied Russian troops for a dozen years.

Just as Basayev thrived for years after a Russian mine blew off one of his legs, the Chechen rebels have kept up their fight despite the loss of an array of charismatic and wily leaders. The violence has spread throughout Russia's poor and resentful, largely Muslim North Caucasus.

Russian politicians crowed that Basayev's demise would take away the man who was an inspiring catalyst for the small guerrilla bands that hide in Chechnya's woods and mountains in often-primitive encampments. The death was seen as a tactical ...
